DHCP not saving device (s)
« on: July 04, 2009, 05:51:12 PM »

DIR-825 - revision B1 firmware 2.00NA

No matter how many times I reserve or select the computer/x-box/ world book, the router wont hold it. I do have DHCP reservation selection checked in the settings and the router will see the device's but just wont hold em.

Whats so simple that I'm missing..?

I guess the obvious question is... did you set the static IP address on the computer that you wanted to have a static IP address and also enter the MAC address ino the router under "DHCP Reservations".

You do realize that you can use Static IP addresses without using DHCP Reservation in the router. Here's what the help file says about it:

Add/Edit DHCP Reservation
This option lets you reserve IP addresses, and assign the same IP address to the network device with the specified MAC address any time it requests an IP address. This is almost the same as when a device has a static IP address except that the device must still request an IP address from the D-Link router. The D-Link router will provide the device the same IP address every time. DHCP Reservations are helpful for server computers on the local network that are hosting applications such as Web and FTP. Servers on your network should either use a static IP address or use this option.

Yup I know about those settings and thats not how dlink has been doing it and it should be the same on this router.
From  DI-604 to my other router the DIR-655 they have all allowed me to catch the mac address and assign it an ip from the router and thats it. From there each network device gets its on ip from the server side of the router and life is easy, thats what I'm after and if theres no Dlink person that can inform me on how to correct my small over sight, I will be returning this for the DIR-655 that was much more prepared for customer release and actually works.

ok, I'm confused.  I also have thhe DIR825 router and can assign Static IP addresses in two ways.

For example, the router is set to issue IP addresses (DHCP) from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.199.

I can assign any IP address in the range from 192.68.1.2 to 192.168.1.99 to any computer and also enter the default gateway as 192.168.1.1 and the appropriate DNS server IP addresses in each computer.  That way those computers have a fixed IP address.  I've done this in numerous routers at home and at work, and it works perfectly.  On several of my computers and devices, I use the DNS Servers from my ISP, and on a couple of them, including my computer, I use the DNS Server IP's from OpenDNS.com.

The second way would be to do it through the DLink firmware.  You would assign a fixed IP address in the DHCP range (in the router firmware) and tell the router what the MAC address is. That way, each time the router sees the MAC address, it assigns the same IP address.  You don't have to assign the IP address on the computer that way, just leave it set for DHCP and it will always get the same IP assigned to it's MAC address.

I personally don't see any reason for the second way.  I'm using several fixed IP addresses on my network that are below the DHCP range, and they work just fine.  I also have an  XBox and a Wireless Gaming Adapter, and a Wireless Media Extender and a Windows Home Server, plus my computer that all have fixed IP addresses that are below the DHCP range.  They all work just fine with the DIR-825 Router.

oops, you know what?  I just realized that you are saying you have a DLink DIR-655 Router.  This is the DLink DIR-825 Forum.  However, I know that you can assign fixed IP addresses on the DIR-655 as I described in the first way above.  Not sure about the 655's firmware settings, sorry.

Rick please stop replying to this thread. You had the track right the first time and now your little knowledge is getting ahead of you. If you must go re-read my first post and then input some information that would help the situation. As I stated in my second post I have both of the routers and was comparing the one setting that is the hangup.

Ok I have decided that since there isn't really any support here and Dlink customer service could not help me in one bit I am returning this router. I have come to the comclusion that this formware is not ready for release to the general public without a "Beta" tag to it-if that.

I was also glad and a bit confirmed to see about 10 of these back on the shelf repacked at Fry's in California. The customer rep there said he was suprised at Dlink.
So many people were waiting fot the B-revision to come out and now there's some 90% of them back in the store, all returns and about 5 new ones....

Dlink-cmon pull your finger out like you use to. Your tech support use to be really good, and I mean really good.
I can remember watching (about a month ago) over a new tech put in a new g wireless card to a desktop. For whatever reason it didn't like the pci slot and he didn't change it. He had the drivers right and everything else. After calling tech support and going to level 2-they said here's a ## and take it back to where you purchased it and get an exchange. I casually changed the pci slot of the wireless card and sure enough after the reboot, it was fine.

Get with it guys.
