I have had a DNS-321 for several years with a 2TB WD driver in it. I recently purchased a Toshiba 5TB drive to go in the other bay to increase storage. When I first inserted the new drive along with the old it appeared to freeze the whole box. I powered the unit down and removed the existing WD drive thinking that may help. It did, as I now have the normal screens that prompt me to format the new Toshiba drive. I choose to format it as a new drive and have tried both EXT2 and EXT3 to see if I could get it to work with either one. On whichever file system I choose it gets to about 13% and then stops with error code 17. I don't know how to correct this please help me out.

You'll need to check with D-Link support to see if 5Tb drives are supported on this model DNS. it may not be.

according to their technical manual it can support any size.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.

I'm having the same problem when adding a new 3TB drive. I tried one old 1TB drive alongside the new drive, and it hung. Then I tried just the new drive and I got the error 17. The blue light is blinking, which might mean that it is actually formatting and incorrectly reporting the error. I'll wait and see if the light stops blinking by tomorrow.

This is an old topic, but did anyone ever get a resolution to it? I'd hate to think I wasted money on two new drives.

The DNS-321 only supports drives up to 2TB.

That seems to be the case, unfortunately. It shows a negative size in the setup screen, and won't let me enter any number for the size of the drive.

Can I use 2TB of my 3TB drives by formatting it elsewhere? What formatting and partitioning options would I use? Or are they just useless in the DNS-321, and I should find a different RAID enclosure?

You might try to use a partitioning program to downsize the the drive in a PC, then install into the DNS and test...

I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and get a different RAID enclosure. I'm looking at the Western Digital My Cloud Ex.

Ya, this seems to be an older NAS unit and is limited to drive size. 

I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and get a different RAID enclosure. I'm looking at the Western Digital My Cloud Ex.
