DNS-321 hangs randomly
« on: November 11, 2009, 05:05:08 PM »

I have been using my DNS-321 for several months now for backup and serving music, and recently I have found it hung/unresponsive.  All three blue lights on the front panel are on steady, I can ping it but not open the web admin or telnet to it, nor does my nw music player detect it.  Pressing the power button on the front panel does nothing, so I end up having to pull the power.  It always comes back up, and yesterday I was able to copy all of its contents to a backup DNS-321, so it worked for a good long while.

So far the hangs seem random.  I am going to try turning on the Firefly diagnostic logging and see if there are any smoking pistols left lying around.  Any other ideas on how to diagnose this?  Happened just now, it was playing music and without warning stopped.  This time I had an open telnet session though and it is still active and responding so perhaps I can make some headway.  UPDATE: This was not the same kind of hang - I think I did something with the admin gui to kill mt-daapd, I restarted it and am back in business.

Firmware 1.03 (but it was doing this with 1.01 as well), running the fun_plug 0.5 Firefly.  SMART tests pass both disks.  Unfortunately the scandisk fails immediately (ie I don't think it runs at all).

Any advice at all would be helpful.

How about removing (just move it elsewhere on the NAS disk) the fun_plug.  See if that was causing it.

If you can't think of what you may have changed around the first time you got the error it may be hard to isolate.

I did think of one thing that had changed - I had enabled jumbo frames on both my DNS-321 units so backups would be faster.  Yesterday I disabled them on my backup but not on the one that is failing - just did that an hour ago so lets see how it goes.  If no change I will relocate fun_plug as you suggest.

I hope you're lucky enough to isolate your problem.  Sometimes a change is made and you just can't see how it could be responcible for the problem but it is.  Crazy at times.

I would like to know if your problem clears up.  I want to use fun_plug as well and have jumbo frames enabled.  I'd hate to harm my NAS data.

In the 24 hours or so since I disabled jumbo frames no hangs.  Fingers crossed.

You might consider resetting to factory defaults and reconfiguring.  This may sort out the issues.  FWIW, I run jumbo frames here and they haven't caused any issues.

GRJ, are you also running Fun Plug?  If so, aren't you using 4K Jumbos?

I am not running FunPlug and I do indeed use 4k jumbo frames.  I was previously using 9k jumbo frames, and they worked as well.  However, I actually saw a small (2-3%) increase in transfer time using 4k jumbo frames, so I settled on that size.

FunPlug could be the cause of this hanging issue, depending on what you have enabled/installed using it.
