Removing Raid without formatting
« on: August 05, 2009, 08:16:30 PM »

Currently running two 1TB disks as RAID. After a while, I realize only a small amount of information only exists on the NAS.

I'd like to remove the NAS and just run two separate 1TB disks; backing up the exposed folder to the other drive for redundancy.

Is it possible to 'UnRAID' the drives in the 323? I see the button to select RAID AND format. Will both drives be formatted if I unraid them?

Assuming that it is a RAID1 configuration and that the RAID1 array occupies the entire volume of the drives (ie you did not have RAID1 &  JBOD) - remove one drive, format the other, and then reinstall the first - you should end up seeing the two drives as Volume_1 and Volume_2.

If you try to change the drive configuration through the web interface it WILL format both drives.

If you have a RAID0 array then a backup and reformat is the only way forward.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Worked like a charm. Thanks Fordem, solid advice as usual!
