Author Topic: DIR-855 MYSTERY: 50-80% loss of Internet speed compared to direct LAN connection  (Read 6515 times)

Hello all.

I'm having some rather peculiar problems with the DIR-855 - problems which have arisen over the last few days. Previously the DIR-855 has performed fine.

Here is the problem:
When connected to the internet from my Dell Studio XPS 16 laptop via the DIR-855 I experience vastly reduced connection speeds - in the case of the upload speed it is so low that I'm unable to send emails with attachments. Uploading photos to Facebook, Flickr and other upload tasks take forever and most often fail completely.

I have a 15 MB (down) / 1 MB (up) ADSL (land line-based) connection from www.fullrate.dk, which when LAN connected effectively gives me about 12 MB (down) and 0.8 MB (up).

However, when connected wirelessly through the DIR-855 I now get only 6 MB (down) and about 0.1 MB (up) (!). This, as I'm sure you can appreciate, is most unsatisfactory. The signal is very strong, so that's not the issue. Before this happened the speed was only slightly lower than the previously mentioned direct LAN connection.

I have tested the current wireless speed from another computer and got the exact same results, so it doesn't seem to be a problem in my laptop configuration.

I'm very puzzled by this - and I have, naturally, resat the DIR-855 and reconfigured it (twice). I even changed the channel several times but to no avail. It's still INCREDIBLY slow ...

Can anyone help me out and solve this mystery??

Peace,

SJB

Have you disabled the QoS engine? I've found that it doesn't accurately detect the speed of the connections for some reason and disabling it restores full speed to your internet.

If that is disabled, try plugging in directly to the router and see if your speeds are affected in anyway.

I had disabled it, yes - but I finally discovered what caused the problem, even if I don't know exactly how it happened. I had installed HTC Sync, a synchronization tool that goes with the new Android HTC Hero smartphone which was also connected to my wireless network. The phone annoyed me so I packed it up and uninstalled the HTC Sync software ... and to my amazement all the problems were immediately solved. My connection speed was back to normal! Something in either the software or in the phone's wifi connection must have caused the severe decimation of my wireless broadband speed. No idea what it could be - but be warned, if you purchase the HTC Hero and have the DIR-855 ...

So - mystery solved ... and another one has now arrived :-)

It depends.

The phone was most likely a "G" speed product. If you were using draft N on your PC, and both were in the 2.4 GHz range, then the router actually did what it was supposed to do.

When you mix B and G products on N, it falls back to B or G speeds. G does the same thing with B devices... if you use a B on G, it will fall back to B speeds.

This is to prevent the legacy, slower devices from getting packets that it cannot understand or read and causing massive floods on the WLAN from the B or G devices replying to resend because they cannot understand the newer packets of the higher speed WLAN.

At least, that's how I interpret how it's supposed to work.

Very interesting - thanks for clearing that up.

How would one solve this problem then? I'm no luddite but I'm not wildly tech savvy either - could you guide me through to a solution? I'm unsure what "Draft N" means for example.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to address my problems  :)
