Newbie question on bridge/AP/repeater etc
« on: August 16, 2009, 06:15:49 AM »

Hi,
I hope somebody can help me.

Here is my home situation:

I have and ADSL-modem (Fritzbox) downstairs. Upstairs a (Sitecom)router where my pc and NAS are connected to.
The modem and router are connected through wi-fi. The router is in bridge/repeater mode.

Also I have a mediaplayer (Popcorn) which connects wireless to the modem.

Now I bought a dir-825 to upgrade to gigabit and also use 300N for some stuff.

But I can't get the DIR-825 to connect wireless to the wifi modem. Reading through posts I understand that the DIR-825 can't function as a 'bridge'. Is that the functionality needed to wireless connect upstairs/downstairs?

So it is Modem >> wireless >> DIR-825>wired to PC & NAS

Any advice? Can i get this to work with the 825 or should I just return it?

Thanx

Etienne

Hi,

the DIR-825 can't connect wireless to your Fritzbox or Sitecom router.
There is no wireless bridge or repeater mode.

If you only need the "N speeds" between your PC's and etc (but not to your modem)...

You could try...
a) modem connected wireless to old router in bridge mode (on wirelss b/g --> with an SSID of "modem" for example)
b) then connect your 825 to the back of the bridged wireless router (not in the WAN port, but in one of the normal ports)
c) Then connect your PC's and other devices on your 825 (wired and/or wireless)
--> Make sure your b/g wireless on your 825 has a differnt SSID and is on a different channel.
d) make sure that your 825 is not setup for DCHP, DNS, ect.  (Your modem will have to continue to do this work.

Thanks for the answers. This does clarify.

Are there other D-link routers that do have the repeater/bridge functionality (the 655 or 855 maybe?).

I wonder if placing 2 wireless routers next to each other as suggested above won't interfere too much.

Are there any other devices that offer good 300 N performance, can bridge/repeat and share printers?
