firmware 1.02.02  (note this is newer than the newest posted in the sticky for this sub-forum,  as well as updated screen shots in the FAQs are needed).

Motion detection is setup correctly, active area is the whole screen, sensitivity 50%, the SD card is selected as the storage option.  New, verified-in-other-D-Link-cameras SANdisk brand-name SDHC card installed and formatted.

No recordings appear to be persisted.  Even a manual recording of either video or screen shot is not.  I get a message: "convert record file successfully: /storage/emulated/0/Pictures/mydlink/xxxxxxxx_yyyy-mm-dd_hh-mm-ss.mp4".  (not sure why a video would go in the pictures folder...) Yet when browsing the SD card from the mydlink app, the timeline is empty.

Indeed, viewing the card on a PC shows there are no recordings.  It does seem to be correctly formatted and has md-lrc, picture and record folders.  But no mp4's or jpegs.  Note the folder names do not agree with the folder structure mentioned in the popup when the recording is manually created.

It seems as though it is trying to save to the Cloud rather than the SDcard, and it just silently fails.  I went to start a free trial for Cloud, just to see if that is the issue, but it does not list this model as a supported device.  In any event, a manual recording to the local SD card should work.

When you manually record, it records to your device (phone or tablet), not the SD Card.

Are you getting notifications but no video is being recorded?

I have this camera at home and use cloud recording.

Make sure you are formatting the card in your camera, not on another camera or device.

Thank you.  It's mostly working now.

• I didn't realize when I manually record, it goes to the mobile device with the app installed.  In hindsight I should have realized that the filespec shown was on my phone, but I would think most users won't realize that, and there should be some sort of visual cue that that's where they'll need to look.   
• The SD card was already formatted in the camera, so no issue there.
• Sensitivity in this version of firmware defaults to 50%.  I had to crank it up to 90% to get it to register even large motions.  As high as 80% I got nothing.
• I am still not getting notifications.  Other D-Link cameras on the same account are doing notifications.  So, not sure what the deal is here.  It is obviously triggering and producing recordings - but I'm not getting the notification from this particular camera.

Finally, I didn't realize I needed to add an automation rule to say to make a recording when a motion is detected.  In hindsight, I understand that it's setup this way so you can have any arbitrary action assigned including actions on other devices, which is way more powerful, but since in prior generations of D-Link cameras simply enabling motion detection got you recordings, this is a behavior change that may befuddle people without some cues, e.g. a message on the page where the detection area is setup to remind the user to setup an automation to actually do the recording.

Glad it is working now. I completely understand everything you have said (and agree). I wish all the options were on the motion detection page. What to detect, where to record, and on/off for notifications. Seems simple. I know they made the app to work with future products such as water sensors, smart plugs, and similar devices so they have the automation system set up as it is. Unfortunately this makes simple camera functions confusing.

This app can be confusing and the app team will hopefully include more information in the app since there isn't a manual available. I will make sure FAQs will be updated early next week.

As far as the motion detection itself goes, I know this camera as well as the DCS-936L (basically the same camera) uses basic pixel-changing detection - meaning when it detects pixel changes it will trigger a detection. This is common with a lot of cameras in the industry. Obviously some mechanisms are better than others. Cameras with a PIR sensor are more accurate.  I have my 8010 camera pointing out a window facing west and was getting 40+ notifications a day. I have it set to 90%. If I have it below 80, it seems to trigger shadows and more broad motion but will not detect a car driving by.  To help limit the false notifications, on the screen where you select the areas of motion to detect, do not select all the boxes. Only pinpoint where to detect motion. Mine points out to my front yard/street so I only selected about 6 squares that overlay the street. This definitely helped but still was not near perfect. I have several other cameras (some D-Link some not) and I get at least half the notifications from them, which some are pointing out the same direction (just in another room).
