Spent the better part of 2 days troubleshooting this at the laptop level before thinking it might be with the DIR-882.  The laptop is an Acer A515-54-BQ30 (itself running firmware 1.12) with an Intel AC-9560 WiFi chipset running Windows 10 Home version 1909 (tried several version of Windows too).  Both firmware 1.11 and 1.2 on the DIR-882 exhibit the issue, which is the laptop system event log get absolutely spammed by adapter resets and disconnects when connected to 5GHz, eventually disabling itself... but when on 2.4 no issues at all.  Likewise, no issues on 2.4 or 5GHz when connected to a DIR-860L running a DD-WRT version from late 2018.  Needless to say, the network stability when connected to the 882 via 5GHz is terrible to the point of being unusable.

I'm curious if anyone else has noticed this issue between the AC 9560 chipset and the DIR-882 when on 5GHz?  I tried switching a few settings both at the adapter level and DIR-882 level (painfully one at a time to test each change).  I tried so many versions of the chipset drivers I lost count.  I tried Windows 10 Home version 1703, 1809 (revision 2) and 1909.  Same results.  I was using Smart Connect but disabled that so I could at least get the laptop stable on 2.4, which is seems to be.  For now I intend to keep the laptop and just use 2.4 GHz until new drivers get released for the chipset or the DIR-882 gets new firmware or I throw in the towel and load DD-WRT.

Any ideas on something I have control over being the culprit (like a default setting buried somewhere)?  I'm out of ideas.

Does this laptops wifi adapter happen to be a user changeable adapter that you could take out and put in a different adapter to try?
If you load up WRT on the 882 does the 5Ghz work then?

No, it's a built-in adapter.  I do have a USB wireless adapter somewhere that I can dig out and try, but not sure it's 5GHz... actually pretty sure it's not.

I haven't tried loading WRT on the 882 yet... to be honest, even though i hate the interface of the stock firmware, the 882 with it has been pretty damn reliable so I don't want to rock the boat.  Since I have 2.4 working stable now with this laptop, I think that's good enough for now (this is my wife's laptop and she doesn't know any better... lol).  But yes, at some point I'm planning on switching out to WRT, but I usually wait until the stock firmware stops getting updated.  Or at least until my wife goes out of town and is not going to yell at me for "messing up the internet" when I try to load WRT and mess it up 15 times before getting it working...

Seen other posts in others forums about Intel based adapters. Not sure why they are problematic. Possible differences between the drivers are not fully compatible.

Might give a DWA-192 a try.

@go140point6 since Intel AC9560 is one of the few 160 MHz compatible clients in existence you should first try to take this variable out of the equation while troubleshooting  the connection ; check both the router and the WiFi adapter and lock them out to a 80 MHz wide channel max ( no 160 MHz or 80+80 MHz  on either of them ) .
Secondly it's known that Intel's adapters don't play nice when you're running the 5GHz band using higher number channels or even DFS ; I would suggest to set up the WiFi network manually to broadcast on a lower channel (36>48) , in AC only mode (if you don't have other N compliant clients or either Mixed N/AC if you do but don't use  A/N/AC mode ) and leave channel width to Auto 20/40/80 MHz .
From experience with Intel's adapters it should work ; if t does then you can fiddle with the 160 MHz support and make us jealous with the results  ( with a PHY link speed of 1,7 Gb/s real life throughput should be near to wired gigabit speed) .

good ideas... I didn't know about the lower channels playing better with Intel chipsets, I'm sure it's set to auto by default so that's worth exploring.  When I get the chance, I'll do some more testing and report back.  I'm pretty sure I left DFS off but I'm sure I immediately set 80+80 (who wouldn't?) although I was having the issue on firmware 1.11 also (before 80+80 was an option).  Thanks for the input.
