If i move to this over the dir-655 will I eascpe the poor firmware and rubbish stability the 655 has. Also dose the 855 have securespot (im praying it dose not)

Currently no securespot but who knows ...? 

As the firmware and functions are pretty much the same, you can see that some have the same problems and need to reboot the device after same days.

My recommendation, after having this router for a year and at first really wanting to believe in it... is to move to either an Apple Airport Extreme (I purchased this after having the 855 for more than 6 months and needing dual-band) or purchase one of the Linksys dual-band routers. I don't prefer Linksys since their support is also pretty bad, and not that I'm an Apple fanboy (let me tell you, far from it) but I can say that the router works. It doesn't have SPI as the Linksys or D-Link, but I'm sure you'll have more luck using it than one of the others.

I used to LOVE Linksys, and switched to D-Link with much hesitation, and regret it substantially. I should have listened to my gut. D-Link tech support is non-existent in my case. In fact, I think they made matters worse than they did to help me.

Agree 100%  The 855 is extreamly buggy.  The lack of a fix after a year is looking more and more like an unresolveable  hardware issue..   If you are not in a hurry then wait a few months, and check back to see if an act of god occured and resolved the problems.  If your need is more immediate then stear clear of the 855.

I actually gave away the dir 655 that I had thinking the 855 would be better. It's the worst router I've used! Currently looking for a non dlink router.

The problem here is that DLink stupidly believe that just because they have a fast processor in the unit, two wireless nics ( for g and n on 2.4 and 5.2 ghz) that they can label this dung pile a premium router.

It struggles with the really bad firmware that cannot even perform the most basic features. It is like having a Ferrari FXX with no wheels. Sure it has a great engine but it won't get you from A to B.

I cannot see how DLink can put their name to this rectal dribble powered router.

Despite of all the bad stories i've read here, I can say that my DIR-855 works 24/7 for three months now without any problems.
One PC wireless on 5Ghz, two PC's wired and one laptop wireless connected to an accesspoint which is wired to the DIR-855.
I use the DIR-855 just for that so no port forwarding and other things.
My DIR-855 is A2 with firmware 1.12EU.

ps I agree that support is very poor. Why so much difference in firmware versions???

1.1x firmware was really stable. The new 1.2x firmwares are as stable as an upside-down pyramid.

I too had little problems with the 1.1x firmware. The only issues were the wireless. So I turned those off and used an Apple Dual-Band Airport Extreme. Now the router on 1.2x crashes every 1.5-2 days. So really, it's little more than a waste of electricity now.

The hardware in fact IS premium.. It's good stuff.. And early firmwae versions that didn't differ a whole lot from the Ubicom reference firmware was reasonably stable. It is the current firmware by D-link that is at fault. I even read somewhere all the "Premium" series share the same firmware core, and that they are incapable of reproducing the errors in their test lab. So I guess once they solve it, the 655, 825 and 855 will all be stable at once.
It is nothing new that D-link makes faulty software occasionally (Compare D-link wireless drivers with the default Ralink ones.. Ralink works a lot better.) But what really bothers me is their silence. I have written smallnetbuilder and asked them to take a look into this. If we pay $300 for a router it shouldn't be like this.
