DCS-942L not working over wireless with an SD Card
« on: December 14, 2012, 02:42:24 AM »

Hi

My DCS-942 is doing everything quite well, except when an SD card is inserted.  When connected to the network via ethernet, everything works well.  I can set detection zones with snapshot or video modes and it does what I want it to do, however, as soon as I remove the ethernet cable and wish to use the camera over wireless, the unit fails to work at all (red light illuminated).  If I then remove the SD card, it will work over wireless again with all the capability except for SD oriented operations.  I have performed several hard resets and formatted the card with no success.

Any advice on what might be the issue?

Many thanks in advance.

My 942 did the same thing,  it appears there are very few Sd cards that will work with the camara,  I tried class 10 16g and 32 g cards among all i could find around the house no luck except a  class 4 8g card works. (Another dlink POS)

It appears that if the camara doesnt like the SD card it hangs and wont initialize the wifi

I Guess if you cant find one that works around the house, there is a list of types/brand of SD cards that do work on dlinks web site to buy one

8 gig is enough for my usage so i just use that, and I am not sure who manufactures it, it is branded Micro center a computer store in Denver

I'm facing the same problem on 3 webcams (out of the 3 just purchased), with the standard 16GB sd cards included in the package, even after the firmware update. I also reformatted the cards with the webcam (connected via ethernet) and the pc but they only work with a wired connection.  >:(

The question is... shouldn't the sd cards sold together with the webcams be compatible with them, by defintion? ??? I'm thinking to ask d-link to replace them or provide a solution, but I would be very graceful to anybody in this forum who may have solved the issue and would share the solution with me.

Thanks in advance  ;)

After I update to latest firmware (2.10 sth as the date of oct 31 2016) I have the same problem, when using wifi at home. It has no connect unless took sd card from it.
However, when I take 942l to my office, it work properly, so fast connect to wireless with sd card . No problem at all. So, I suspect it come from my wireless router at home, it should have problem on connect between TPlink & Asus wireless router. At my office we use Aruba which is more expensive than. I will test it this evening again at home. But just wanna tell u guy that 942L itself has no problem. It need to change config in your router wireless. I may try to do "no security" to test it.

Interesting that the wireless might be the issue.

[I don't have a 942l, so can't test here]

I guess also missing from the previous posts above- what is everyone doing with the sd card?  24x7 or motion video or image capture?

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

What Mfr and model is the main host router?
What wireless modes are you using?
What is the distance between the Camera and the main host router?

I recommend setting a static IP address ON the cameras outside of the main host routers default DHCP IP address pool as a troubleshooting step: 192.168.#.42 DHCP

Test cameras with uPnP and uPnP Port Forwarding both enabled on ALL cameras: DCS Cloud (L) Series Camera Configuration and Mydlink.com

If the camera works at work and not well at home, there could be either home router configurations problems or external interferences at home.
How many other wireless devices do you have connected to the main host router?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use a WiFi Scanner to find out. How many?

Also v2.11 is available as well..

Ok I found the solution

At home, when I use TP link C1200 with wireless N. No matter I set, it can't access and get ip. Even though reservation, auto ip, or static ip. It will solved only when took SD card from it. Then 942L will quickly work with Wifi.

I try another with TP link router wireless model TL-WR843ND . Only clue is set wireless region to "USA" that it ! problem solve though I live in Thailand. 942L quickly connect to wifi without problem. When I change region back to Thailand , it can't connect again till remove SD card. So, this proof problem originate from this!

Because TL-WR843ND has wisp function so, I attach them to my current wifi and separate web cam ip to TL-WR843ND  Wifi. Now the problem gone. So, problem come from wifi setting in router. I don't want to waste time to find how to do in C1200 (because I had tried many ways on that around 5 hour, because it has no region setting on it) just wanna tell u guy for the solution.

Thanks for posting your solution. Some D-Link products are product and regional specific and not are compatible in other regions. So some regional settings may work then may effect other products or have side effects. Users are encouraged to buy D-Link products with in there region and not outside.

Good Luck.

I found out what happened. At first, I thought it is related to firmware updated, and then SD card brand, type...No later on, after I tried set it up with different router brand, it worked beautifully. Yes it worked well if wired connection with all routers but with wireless setup, it didn't work with all routers. I bought brand new mesh router from Netgear and it cost me 4 hours to tried everything but still given same error as long as the micro SD card was inserted. But after I added my old router Asus AC3200 as an 2nd router to the network and had this camera WPS in this router and worked successfully. Please try it to believe me.
