Mac Address Filter Limit
« on: August 28, 2009, 11:11:49 AM »

Hello,

I just bought this router because my old router can only handle 25 mac addresses in the filter list.

It appears that current firmware for DIR-825 RevB only allows 25 Mac Address Filter also.

Just wondering if there are any suggestions for me.  I need to put in filter for more than 25 wireless devices.

Thanks,

A lot of devices have this limitation, the #'s very on how many MAC's can be entered but they all have this issue. The good news (or bad depending on how you look at it) is that MAC filtering doesn't really provide the security that most people think it does (easily sniffed and spoofed).  I would suggest switching to encryption, while WEP and WPA has been proven compromised, WPA2 and more specifically AES are still very strong encryption's and should provide the security you require.

The basic reason is that MAC only filtering shouldn't be done on a large scale, and thus why you see such limitations.

I want my network as secure as possible.  I am using invisible SSID, WPA2-AES, and Mac Address filtering.
Even with that I still don't feel that secure about my network.  I have Mcafee Antivirus, and about 3 spyware checker apps running also.

I was looking at the configuration simulator for Netgear WNDR3700 and it had about 50 Mac Address filtering.
