Reading an ex-DNS320 hard disk

Hi
I've removed a drive due an issue - and am trying to connect to my windows pc via a SATA cable and power supply.  When I connect via USB the drive says it needs formatting before it can be read. Does the DNS have it's own filesystem?  Is it possible to read these files via Windows rather than the DNS?
