I am about too hook up new DGL-4500...questions...
« on: August 28, 2009, 02:58:01 AM »

I'm sorry if my english isnt ok. I'll try my best :)

I looked and it says it is a A1 model with 1.02 FW I believe it said. From what i understand the only difference is the firmware version that it is shipped with?

I read a little here and I know sometimes it is important to update things to the latest but I see that a lot of people have some problems with the updated firmware.

I just want to know if i should update the firmware to a newer version and if so, what one?

Also, I am using this mainly as a wired router. I have 2 PCs that will be wired but I also have a playstation 3 that will be wireless. Sometimes it will be wired, but mostly wireless.

What is procedure to make sure the playstation3 will connect and how do i update correctly?

any help will be appreciated  ;D

If it is f/w 1.02 then many would say to stay with that. If you look back a little over a year in the forums, you'll see what happen to some that use a PS3 and did a upgrade to the f/w.

Ok thank you for your input!

Is there any negatives  to not updating?

Use the router for a few weeks and if everything works then there really is no reason to upgrade. If you do come up on something that bothers you, don't rush to upgrade the f/w. Make a post here and you may get help that will not have you upgrading.

I agree with Anon. If your router works with 1.02, don't upgrade. If you do decide to upgrade stick with F/W 1.15 or lower. DO NOT use 1.20 or 1.21, unless you have nothing better to do than waste your time beta testing bad firmware.

Thank you all for your replies :)

I did not get a chance to hook it up today but hopefully i will tomorrow.

Another question...

When i have it wireless to use with the playstation 3, do i just go to the playstation 3 network connection and change to wireless?

The A2 has heatsinks, A1 does not.

will that make a big difference? the router is not going to be on the monitor or on the pc but just the desk.

It couldl depending on how warn you like your place.  Cooler running hardware usually lasts longer as well.  I do notice my A2 is more stable than the 2 A1's I've been through and it's fairly cool in here.
