I simply cannot believe what I've done. I'm so, so careful about file redundancy, and use my D-Link as a mirrored array for my file server, which is then backed up every night to a removable HDD that is swapped out every week. But...
I had to recover one of my computers earlier this week, and backed up my Outlook e-mails to a pst file. I copied this file to the server (the DNS-323), and eventually copied it to one of the physical drives within the computer I was restoring. I then deleted the file from the server thinking I no longer needed it. Not thinking, after I receoved the PC I formatted the other drives (which I use as backup), and started backing up the PC. When it came time to restore the e-mails, the file was gone. I tried a few programs from the web to find the files lost from the formatting, and while it found some files, the pst file (2 GB in size), wasn't one of them.
I know the file was on the D-Link, but cannot find a program to look for deleted files that will work over a network. Do any exist? If not, is the USB option on the D-Link easy to use? Will it mess up my network connectivity if I take it off of the network and plug it directly into the PC? Are there any native file utilities on the D-link to recover deleted files?
I'm up against a wall here. The D-link is my file server, and I don't want to write any files to it in case the file is still there. However, I *need* to write files to it. Thus, I"m stuck. Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated!!!!!
