Network and/or Internet connection loss
« on: January 23, 2008, 10:02:39 AM »

I have a DIR-615 Rev. B, which I bought nearly a month ago. I have updated the firmware to the latest (2.24, I think).

I set it up as a wireless access point as per the instructions. I've been running it in N-mode only. I had the channel set to "Auto", but I've tried using specific channels as well. I'm using WPA Personal. I've turned off the wireless on my Verizon FiOS modem/router just in case there was a conflict there. I have only my Macbook Pro wirelessly connected to it and the DIR-615 is connected to my FiOS model/router. All wired computers are connected to the FiOS modem.

The connection dies every 2-3 minutes, either between the Macbook Pro and the DIR-615, or between the DIR-615 and my FiOS router... I can't tell. My Macbook shows a strong connection to the DIR-615 at the moment, even though iChat is telling me there no internet connection right now... and I'll have to reset the connection again (turn Airport off on my Macbook, then back on) before pressing the Post button below. I've never had a connection problem between my Macbook and my FiOS router, but it runs in b and g only, so I bought the DIR-615 for n-mode.

What the heck am I doing wrong? I'd ha te  to return the DIR-615 to the store, but I have no choice if I can't get it working.

Thank you!

So I would assume you have disabled DHCP on the DIR-615 and connected it to your FIOs router LAN to LAN?

When you say that your MAC is informing you a strong signal and your iCHat is saying you not connected, have you tried to see if you are still connected locally? To me it sounds like you WAN connection dropped.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I disabled DHCP on the DIR-615 as per the instructions. The DIR-615 is connected via cat-5 cable to my FiOS modem/router... LAN to LAN.

I did what you suggested and this is what I found when the internet connection is dropped:
I can't connect to the DIR-615 (by going to 192.168... etc)
I can't connect to the FiOS modem/router (by going to 192.168... etc)
I can't connect to my PC on the network, which is plugged directly into the FiOS modem/router

So it seems there is a problem between my Macbook and the DIR-615, not necessarily anything after the DIR-615.

If I go to the Airport thing at the upper-right corner of my Macbook screen and "Turn Airport Off", then "Turn Airport On", it reconnects to the DIR-615 and I can resume. That's what I've been doing since I bought the DIR-615. It's frustrating :)

I'm going to try running the DIR-615 in n+g mixed mode and see if anything improves. In the meantime, is there something else I should look at?

I know you said you set up as instructed to make it an access point, but can you actually retype the steps you have done and the port numbere and LAN side private IP addresses. It will help me get a better understanding...... Really want to make sure it is a wireless problem not a physical configuration problem.
