RAID 1 with existing drives

I have a Fantom GForce Megadisk NAS that has suffered a hardware failure. I had the two disks set with the EXT2 file system and formatted as RAID 1, and I'm reasonably certain they're both still fine

If I buy a DNS-321, will I be able to just pop the drives in, or will I have to do some type of brain surgery to get the data back?

Brain surgery.  You will have to format them in the DNS-321, so you need to backup any data.

PS: RAID of any level is NOT a second copy.

If the Fantom GForce Megadisk NAS used a standard EXT2 file system, you might
be able to access your data (read only,  to do the backup) by connecting one of
the bare drives to a SATA computer and booting the computer with a Linux live boot
CD (like Knoppix www.knoppix.com) or using a EXT file system driver for XP (www.fs-driver.org)
if you have an XP system with SATA.

I only have a laptop now, so I guess it's back to amazon for an external drive case as well. Drat.

If this is only temporary enclosure, you could get a sata drive dock http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EXRSDY or a sata usb cable http://www.amazon.com/USB-2-0-SATA-Cable-Adapter/dp/B001OORN06/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1255108073&sr=1-3  either should be less expensive than
a enclosure.

I got a temporary drive cable for $15 at Microcenter. Unfortunately, although I installed the software that allows for the recognition of linux partitions, the raid array folders only seem to be viewable with raid recovery software (which is expensive as hell) - which I guess shouldn't surprise me, but did. I don't really feel like spending $250 for a piece of software to read my files, so I'll have to figure something else out.
