Strange DHCP issues

We started having issues with out dir-615 the other day. Couldn't get any wireless connection at all. The router worked fine over a cabled connection so I updated it to the latest firmware, 3.11NA. Afterward I set up a wireless network and it's a lot better but still behaving a bit strangely. I can connect fine 95% of the time with my laptop running vista but my girlfriends macbook running OSX 10.4.11 can't connect at all. Half the time the wireless network doesn't even show up for the mac. It seems to be an issue with the DHCP so I tried assigning both computers their own IPs in the router to no avail. The mac works just fine with a cabled connection. Does this sound like it would be caused by the DHCP issues that appear to be in the new firmware? Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could try?

This has always worked well for me: Instead of reserving an address for your Mac in the router, go into System Preferences > Network Preferences and manually assign an address outside the range of the router's DHCP server, but in the same subnet (e.g. 192.168.0.254, subnet 255.255.255.0). While you're in Network Preferences, turn off IPV6.
