300 Mbps and QoS Engine Rules
« on: September 27, 2009, 04:42:56 PM »

I am having problem connecting with 300Mbps with the 2.4 Ghz frequency, but I get it at the 5Ghz frequency. I have read the stickied and tried everything there and it seems to work for 5Ghz, but it did not for 2.4 Ghz. The max that I have seen it at is 130 Mbps with 2.4Ghz. I even tried setting it to WPA-2 Only and set to wireless N only, but its still a no go. I am using a Intel 4965AGN wireless card. I can't seen to figure out why it is working on the 5Ghz band, but not 2.4Ghz. =/

I have read the online manual about the QoS function on the DIR-825 and I find that it didn't show how to set up the the Engine Rules. The manual only gave a vague description of what each thing does. I am a complete networking newb so I don't really understand most of it. I want to be able to set up my rule with gaming has priority over web browsing over streaming over downloading over torrenting. Any guides or links to helpful sites would be greatly appreciated. I tried googling for some guides, but I couldn't find any helpful one. From my understanding, I need to find out the port each of my application uses and put it somewhere in the rule. Again, I am a complete networking newb do please explain what you're talking about =). Thanks

Your Intel 4965AGN is limited to a 20 MHz channel in the 2.4 GHz band. So you can't reach more than 135 Mbps.
This is design by Intel  ;)

No.  The Intel 4965AGN is not limited to the 2.4Ghz band.  It is only limited to the 20 Channel width for both radios.

So does that mean that I should be able to get 300 Mbps for both bands? If so, I can only get 300 Mbps for the 5 Ghz band. =/

Anyway, after doing a lot of search, I found that there are not a lot of information about setting up QoS. Seems kind of a useless feature if there is no guide to set it up (not even from the manufacturer). =/

I am going to guess how to set it up. So I need to know the Local and Remote IP Range, Local and Remote Port Range, and Protocol (Any, TCP, UDP, Both, ICMP, Other). So is the IP range the computer that is going to connect to my router and the Port Range is the ports that my applications are using?

I believe that web browsing uses port 80 and 81 with protocol TCP so do I set the Local and Remote IP Range to 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255, Local and Remote Port Range to 80-81 and protocol to TCP?

P2P downloading (torrents) uses a lot of ports and I have no clue which protocol it uses. So I need help figuring out this information. I don't really need to prioritize P2P torrenting because my housemates can just limit their dl, but it is a nice feature to have in case my future housemates are a******s. =P

I do want to be able to prioritize streaming and direct downloading, but I have no clue what ports and protocol they use. Please help. Also please correct my misunderstanding if I have made a mistake.

FYI:

http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/wireless/wireless_n/overview.htm

Friendly Neighbor Assurance
Supports current Draft-N standard direction to support 40MHz channels only in 5GHz spectrum to minimize negative impact to legacy devices/networks nearby.

QoS
In most cases the automatic setting is already the best you can choose.
I would only think of prioritizing traffic, if you experience lags or your stream stops for seconds.

Not sure how to fix your set up but I have tested an Intel 4965AGN with another make of router.  When both radios are enabled, the Intel wifi card was connecting @ 270Mb/s to 300Mb/s, proofing that my "client's" built-in Intel card was not defective.

To get the Intel up to 270 / 300 Mb/s,   you need to set the channel width to Auto and must be using WPD2 with AES.

About the speed, I am getting 130 Mbps on the 2.4 band, but 300 Mbps on the 5 band. I have already set up WPA2 only for both bands and set channel width to Auto, but when I am connecting to the 2.4 band, I am only getting 130 Mbps. =/

Anyway about the QoS, I am still getting lag whenever someone is streaming/dling while I am playing a PC game. If I wasn't lagging with the automatic QoS, I wouldn't bother to research about it =/. I want to be able to set up some rules. Please help.
