Will not take an update
« on: October 02, 2009, 08:39:40 AM »

I wish I would have found this forum before my purchase, but I was so stunned by the greatness of the 4300 I thought the 4500 would just be more of the goodness.  It's too late now, and I can't get this freaking thing to take an update.  I have an A2 with 1.12 out of the box.  I am having random disconnects, poor wireless performance, and some of the other things listed all over this forum.  I would like to try 1.15 or 1.16b3 but my router will not update period, it just goes into a restart loop that only ends with a power cycle of >1 minute.  I guess I could consider myself lucky because I first tried the auto update feature to 1.21 and that didn't take either, and then I found this forum.  I have read all over the forum and haven't found any help yet. Any suggestions, or should I just A: deal with it, or B: buy something else?

If you can return the unit for a refund that should be your first action.  Otherwise have you tried the hard reset button on the router body?  If you go that route then reenter all of your information manually and then save the configuration file.  FW 1.15 has issues with entering information unless you have the wireless enabled.  1.16b3 is what I'm using and it has turned stupid several times on my on my a2 but ran very well on my a1.  Currently my a1 has fw 1.21na and is nothing but an expensive paper weight out in the garage.  Do yourself a favor and do not flash your router beyond 1.16 or you will not be able to roll back your fw.

The hard reset will just put me back to shipped fw right? Or push the reset button after updating? I would think that would just wipe the update. I have tried a clean update from shipped fw already and it wouldn't take. What's the point of an "update fw" feature if it doesn't work? Silly question when considering the state of this piece of ...
I wish I could return but I am beyond the return window. I DO have an uptime of 95% so I guess I can consider myself lucky and just deal with it if there is no proper fw released.

Why oh why, Dlink?

No resetting the router will clear its memory leaving the bare fw that was last installed.  If you're having issues resetting it can sometimes resolve the issue.
