Why are my speeds between computers so slow?
« on: October 07, 2009, 10:35:08 PM »

i had the new firmware, dumped that and im on the 1.31 again.  i have 1 wired pc and 1 wireless.  the wireless is the DWA-552 and wired i have a 1GB 3Com.  my problem is that when i try to transfer files between pc's it takes forever.  a 390mb folder took 6 hrs.... an mp3 file took 30 min etc.  when i ping the wireless from wired i get speeds ~500ms....my wireless is at 300Mbps/excellent strength and wired is running at 1Gb. im not running any bit torrent software when i do this, although that causes everything to come to a dead stop.  does anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

Hi,

Try mapping drives on each pc for the other's hard drive....

I use file copying utilities such as TotalCopy and TeraCopy to do that sort of copying as Windows built-in file copy is known to have issues with larger files....

Real World copy speeds can vary wildly due to environmental factors like microwaves and cordless telephones that can disrupt wireless signals....not to mention home construction issues like walls and concrete etc....

Are you using wireless encryption ?  fastest speeds are achieved with WPA2 and AES cipher...at least for me that is true....  read the stickie post about 300 Mbps speeds in the forum stickies section.

Try the 100MB file download test at  www.testmy.net   you have to register to get access to it...but its a large file test that gives a better real-world result to see how your internet download speed is working....

Maybe you have a bad wire in your wired cable or something unusual that is affecting things....but not enough to knock your  signal out completely.

I had a DWA adapter for my laptop. It didn't work as well as the built-in wireless-G adapter because the antennae goes around the LCD screen. On the DWA adapter, there is no large antennae so the signal was horrid unless you were in the same room as the router (even though the connection said 300Mbps, which is almost meaningless). Check your router for actual speeds.

I quit using the DWA adapter.

The DWA-552 is a PCI card with external antennas.  I have the 556 which is the same card except PCIe.

My computer is in the room above my router, on the other side.  My signal as reported by my computer is usually over 92%.

I can transfer a single 9-10gb file at atleast 9MB/sec over this.

What is the D-link utility reporting for signal strength on the computer with the wireless.  I purchased the breakout antenna for my 556 because my computer is on the floor next to a wall and I wanted the antenna to be raised up, thats how I get such a great signal.

make sure your network computer is connected at 100 or 1000 mb/s.  Maybe its connecting at 10 mb/s and going insanely slow?

hi guys, speed on wireless is 300Mbps, strength - excellent.  the wired is a 1Gb lan card running at 1000Mbps.  i am using wpa2/aes encryption.

Do you not use the d-link software?  It won't help the speeds, but it will register the signal strength a little better.

What channel are you running on?  Channel width?
