filesystem permissions
« on: August 31, 2009, 11:37:41 AM »

not sure if this is exactly like the other posts i've seen on here.

i've set up my permissions like this:

users:
user1
user2
user3

groups:
group1 (user1, user2)

shares:
/            group1       rw
/Movies  user3         rw
/Photos  user3         rw
/Music    user3         rw

when user3 logs in and mounts the /Movies, /Photos or /Music share, they are read-only.
if user1 or user2 log in and mount the / share, they have rw to all folders.  if they try to mount the /Movies, /Photos or /Music share, they're not allowed to even mount.  I'm assuming that's because the actual share is defined to user3, and they can only get to them by browsing and getting the inherited rights (which is fine).

i just don't understand why user3 is read only!  the volume doesn't mount that way, but every time i try to copy a file, create a directory or even touch a file, it tells me that i have insufficient access.  help!

Not sure that seems odd I will have to try to replicate it. What firmware are you running?

it was on 1.02 and now again on the latest beta.

worst part is when this happens, even if i reset the filesystem permissions, the only way i can change them is to remove the folder.  otherwise, it's still marked as read-only.

host os is osx 10.5.8

Have you tried a Windows machine as well?

i don't have any to try from.

i talked my workplace (mixed mac/pc shop) in to purchasing one for my department and we're not seeing the issue there (1.01).  i also do not recall having this issue when i was on firmware 1.01.

i'm tempted to try an nfs mount.  too bad there's no afp/netatalk option. :(

ok, so i tried an nfs mount, but w/o the official documentation, i'm not sure i mounted it with the right options.  plus, it's difficult to discover the uid of the user on the dns-321 w/o a shell.  i assume there will be a gui enhancement in the future to solve this.

at this point, i'm really frustrated with the unit.  it simply will not obey the file permissions i've set!  i put a 50gig .dmg file on it last night, in the "Photos" directory.  i watched, via command line, when the write started.  the permissions at that point were 644, just as i would expect.  however, after the file copy completed, the permissions are now, magically, 444 with no way to change them!

Since I upgraded  ::) to firmware 1.0.3 I have the same problem. I --used-- to be able to backup to the DNS-321, but now, every single directory is read-only, not matter how many times I set the permissions to R/W. I can't even copy files TO the device anymore.

I'm running Mac Snow Leopard 10.6.1.

Can you go backwards with the firmware?

This is really annoying.

Yes you can go back firmware if you did not format the drives in EXT3 after updating. Has either of you had a chance to see if you have the same issue on a Windows PC?
