Configuration page says loading webpage forever
« on: January 23, 2010, 02:15:36 AM »

XP Pro 32 bit
DNS-321 A3 fw 1.03

So I had my DNS-321 hardwired to my DIR-655 and it worked great, I could load the config page out of the easy search which I did several times, and I think I also just opened it in a browser a few times just entering its IP in the address bar. I setup a static IP, which was working fine, the only thing I wasn't 100% confident was if I should put my router's IP in the DNS servers fields on the DNS-321,which is what I think I've done with everything else I have static IP's on and so I did that on the DNS-321, and it was working fine wired to the DIR-655, and I could map the single drive that's in there now etc etc, full functionality.

This was without UPNP turned on in my network places, I have since turned it on. All the devices are 192.168.0.x

Then I moved it to my working DAP-1522 where I want to keep it where I can see it in easy search showing the correct IP and I can map a drive in easy search and the configuration button is enabled, but when I click the configuration in Easy Search or enter the IP in the address bar the browser just sits there "loading webpate " or "connecting" forever. I've rebooted everything, I can see it in my workgroup, can access the drive, can ping it, just can't get the config page to load.

Any ideas? It seemed like when I setup the static IP, it had my ISP DNS server addresses in there, Its late so I was planning on just posting the question and hopefully someone has some ideas, but Maybe I should bring it back here(pain cause of running the power cable) and entering the ISP DNS server addresses but that seems really cheesy.

Since you set up a static IP address for the DNS-321, are you SURE that the subnet is the same for the new router as the old one?

Yes definitely all 192.168.0.*  I double triple checked that right now since you put such emphasis on the question.

What about tweaks I may have done to the DIR-655 or DAP-1522?

Just for clarity, the DAP-1522 is a bridge/switch.

Edit: Is there a "allow remote administration option" on the dns-321 somewhere or something which has that effect?

Have people used DNS-321's over a DAP-1522?

Are you still using the router to connect to the wireless bridge?  Can a computer on either side of the wireless bridge ping computers on the other side of the bridge by name?  Are you sure that computers on either side of the wireless bridge are in the same subnet?

Just to clarify, subnet does consist of the first 3 parts of an IP address, correct? All devices are definitely 192.168.0.* and 255.255.255.0

I use xbox live off the bridge constantly, which doesn't have a name, but if I bring my laptop and wire it to the bridge it can ping a PC wired to the router and vice versa and I can browse the internet wired to either. I can also ping the dns-321 when it's wired to the bridge from a PC wired to the router.

I did find a thread in here from April '09 where a someone says he connected his dns-321 to a dap-1522, asking about file transfer speeds as if that were his only problem

gunrunnerjohn I think I saw a post in here about this where you said you don't use Easy Search, you only use a browser or "their mapping software". The only software that came with my dns-321 that might be besides easy search is the backup software FarStone(which at this point sounds more like "farce" than I'm comfortable with) is that what you meant by "mapping software"?

I notice that I can only see the dns-321 in UPnP devices when its wired to my router, not to the bridge. There are very few configuration settings on the bridge, I have to see if there's a UPnP setting somewhere but I'm almost positive there isn't.

Alright I don't know wtf is up but the whole problem is my xp pro pc since I can wire my xp-pro laptop to the router and load the config page with the dns-321 wired to the bridge. Have no idea what the deal is or what I'm missing. Can see the dns-321 as a upnp device on the laptop but not on the pc.

Yeah I'm really at a loss here. The PC which is experiencing this has plenty of horsepower and never had a problem like this, I don't see anything in any logfile, I hope someone has some suggestion.

Edit I see that sometimes the browser seems like it's starting to talk to the dns cause I enter the IP and eventually it gets /web/login.asp?id=8401878 appended to it, where the number changes, at least this is happening in firefox, I think IE is just never loading.

OK well this is complete BS I have been all over this thing enabling every freaking service I can think of. I've been using this PC with this installation of xp pro for a year and never encountered anything like this, it loads the router and bridge config pages fine, and it loads the dns-321 page when the dns is wired to the router, wo wtf. I'm ready to send this dns-321 back to amazon. I must have 10 hours in this crap and we all know what dlink phone support is like.

Hard to say what's going on without actually seeing the configuration and looking at what's happening.  I don't have anything like a wireless bridge in the mix.  As far as uPnP, I'm not sure how that enters into just getting to the configuration pages of the DNS-321.

I don't use any of the software that was supplied with the NAS, I never even stuck the CD into a machine.  Windows facilities are all that you need to access and manage the NAS.

OK well what ****, it was Nvidia nforce  xp 32 bit ethernet driver, specifically the one included with nforce 15.46, actually the ethernet driver that was installed when I had this issue was 71.0.8.0. The offending PC is a MSI P7N diamond xp pro 32, Q9450 2gb ram. And uh Nvidia can't seem to update the ethernet driver, even when they tell you they are, you download an nforce package which has a readme including a new ethernet driver but it actually may revert or fail to install it.

Here's a thread I made at MSI user HQ about it, sort of detailing in a convoluted way.

Now I can start over redoing all the year of tweaks to services that I brashly undid trying to make this work :(
