Hardwire 321 to PC w/ Crossover cable

I have had the 321 for a while now and have had no problems. Now that i set my main PC to wireless i would like to make the 321 wired into my PC through the gigabit port on the mobo. I bought an 'ebay special' crossover cable and it still didn't work. Windows shows it as a 'Unidentified Network' and I can open the 'Easy Search Utility' and It will show the 321 and it's current IP. But i can't connect to it at all. But as soon as I plug it back into the router it's accessible. I'm not sure what I would have to set the IPs to on either the 321 or my PC. I'm not a networking person.

Try to be simple when explaining netowrking... i'm great with fixing PCs and building, but not great with networking. ::)

You will need to static the NIC IP address to something in the 192.168.0.xx range as the DNS-321 will auto static to 192.168.0.32 if it is not connected to a router providing DHCP or DHCP server. Make sense?

Makes sense to me but as an added note...  You can make a change in the NAS for a static IP as well vice using you computers NIC.  As my Uncle would say "There's more than one way to skin a cat".  Nope, never seen him skin a cat either.

This thread caught my eye and I have a newbie question.  If I want to do a 1x transfer of a large number of .jpg files from my iMac to my DNS-321, would using a crossover cable connected directly between the two be faster/more efficient than running it though my network (w/D-Link DIR-655) which is also hard wired?  TIA.

I can't imagine why it would be any faster.  You have a gigabit switch instead of a direct connection.  The delays there will be unmeasurable.

You should just be using a regular Ethernet Cat5 Cat5e or CAT6 cable.

Since the DNS-321 is no spead deamon, connecting it through your router is fine.  You should not see any speed gain with a direct connection.
