Hi forum,

I just bought a new DIR-628 based on some great reviews at Future Shop (better than most of the other routers).  Before setting up the router I've read the posts with interest - in general, thanks for the good information.  thomasrelee gets top stars for very precise and logical information!

So I just spoke with "Sid" at D-Link Support's 1-800-361-5265 to ask if I should stick with firmware version 1.11 on my hardware version A2, or upgrade to version 1.12 which sounds like the most stable release to date. I also asked about the issues with firmware version 1.22NA.  Sadly the best scripted response he seemed able to give me was "the latest is faster" and "most people don't have problems if the update with the latest firmware".  Even if he's right, he was either forced to read from a script or wasn't reading the forums.  I can't blame the poor guy, he sounded like he was giving tech support from an iPhone in a giant warehouse in Mumbai... but anyways.

My plan is to stick with firmware version 1.11 until D-Link confirms that v1.23NA resolved the issues in v1.22NA.  This makes me sad because one of the main criteria for selecting this router was the USB port so I could connect my printer to it.

Maybe Alex Levee could address this issue on D-Link TV...

That's your best bet to stay with 1.11 because once you upgrade their's no down-grade back to 1.11.

For some unknown reason D-Link's programmers are cranking out c>rapware for firmware right now.

I'll be interested too because I want to use the USB port for my Magic Jack Phone service, and free up the port on my laptop.

Magic Jack has never successfully been used with other "makes" of router that also offer USB ports.

You are better off added USB ports or USB hubs.

Ah, okay, well then, how about a USB Phot printer?  Would I be able to use the USB port for that?

It is sad to say but the SharePort requires a software driver to be install onto the PCs before attempting to access teh USB port.  This seems to be a "hit or miss" install, you PC might fail to boot.

Yes, the USB printer "may" work but if it not with-in the list on known devices () the work, it is "trial and error."  Make sure to use a "quality" USB cable.

You can safely upgrade between the 1.11 to 1.13 firmwares.  As soon as you upgrade to a 1.2xx firmware, you can not "officially" downgrade back to the 1.1xx levels (however, there is a post how to "unofficially" downgrade back to 1.11 firmware.)

 It should be note that my previous test seems to indicate that the "problematic" SecureSpot "module" gets install only with firmware version 1.12.  I had tested going directly to version 1.13 and no SecureSpot "module" was install.  See other posts on this forums stating the SecureSpot dilemma.

If you are purchasing a new printer, you should really consider one that can directly connect to the network, either wired or wireless.  You will have less problems!!!!

Actually, that is what I have decided to do.  I'm getting a Samsung CLX-3175FN MFP color laser. and it will occupy the network port that the Dell MFP 1600n laser had.  It's history.  Way too many problems. The final nail in it's coffin was the fact that it does not support MACs.  I already have a Samung CLP-310n color laser that works with all three of my Thinkpads, and my MACs.

That is good to hear.  The Shareport has been having problems ever since it came into existence.   You would have to install a driver onto the "client" PCs.  This drivers has been know to cause problem in Windows (not sure on Macs) and seems to "single" access.
