DAP-1522 not connecting to DIR-815 properly
« on: April 26, 2011, 04:18:01 PM »

Hi. I don't whether or not actual D-Link techs respond to any of these posts, as I have only seen other users trying to help in the threads of looked at. Hopefully, a fellow user has exprienced a similar issue, and fixed it, and will be able to offer some advice based on his experience.

My problem is two-fold:

1. the DAP-1522 will not connect to the 5GHz network of the DIR-815. Although, this doesn't surprise me as none of my 5GHz-capable devices see it, other than intermittently and at low signal. It is most likely an issue with the 815's 5GHz radio/network.

2. OTOH, the 1522 does appear to connect to the 815's 2.4GHz network just fine. However, there is no Internet access for any of the devices connected to the 1522's ports.

I know the 1522 can work correctly on 2.4GHz, as it previously did fine with my prior 2Wire router from AT&T. (I've just switched to Comcast, using the DIR-815 connected to their SMC modem.)

Also, I know the router and modem work fine (at least with 2.4GHz), as all of my wireless devices connect easily and with screaming bandwidth to the router and Internet.

Any ideas?

I had basically the same problem with the DAP 1522 and DIR 815.  It would work flawlessly on 2.4ghz but only wireless b/g, anytime I introduced wirless n (mixed or alone) it would cause the DAP to drop out frequently, with intermittent connections.  The 5ghz band actually worked on wireless a, but it bugged me that I spent so much money on this equipment to be limited to a 7 year old wireless standard.  I tried searching the internet and dinking around with settings and calling D-Link for probably a total of 70-80 hours before I finally gave up.  I sold the DIR 815 and bought a DIR 825 (costs about $60 more) and it worked right off the bat perfectly on every band and every wireless type and has not caused me any grief since.  My guess is that the 815 is simply too good to be true, it was pretty much the cheapest dual band router available so not really a surprise that it's not the best.  The DIR 825 offers way more features and seems like an all around better router.

Actually, I wouldn't mind that they didn't connect at 5GHz, if the 2.4GHz connection worked correctly. But, even though it says it's connected, none of the devices that are wired into the 1522's LAN ports can connect to the Internet. It worked fine when connected to the "G" wi-fi of my previous ATT 2Wire router/gateway.

I forgot to mention one thing, even when it wasn't working for me (which was when the 815 was broadcasting wireless n, either in 2.4 or 5ghz, which you probably have it doing right now) it would show up as "connected" in the DAP 1522's configuration menu and also in the 815's configuration I believe, but nothing would be able to access the internet.  Soon as I turned the 815 to broadcast only b/g or wireless a, everything worked flawlessly.  D-Link refuses to acknowledge this problem and will insist that you keep trying different channels or changing settings.  Nothing will work man, save your time and get rid of that piece of junk.

I got it to work last night by using the browser control panel to connect via WPS PBC on BOTH units.

Previously, I tried WPS using the browser on the 815 and the physical button on the 1522, and also manually entering the encryption info. Neither worked, even though it said it was connected in both cases.

But, using PBC thru software seems to have done the trick. And, now that I think about it, I had a hard time getting it to work with the 2Wire Gateway, as well, until I used software PBC in both units at that time too.

I think the issue may have more to do with the 1522 than the 815.

FYI, I am going to try the Media Bridge from TrendNet, and the 2AN34D from Encore, which can work as a router, ap/bridge, or repeater, and compare them to the 1522 and 815. They are only 2.4GHz. But, I've never had an issue with multiple streaming and data over that band with my 2 Rokus, GoogleTV, 2 networked BD players, 2 networked Dish receivers, networked TV, and 6 PC's which also stream Slingbox.

A good 2.4GHz N300 signal is all I need. Living in a single-family house, I'm not bombarded with 2.4GHz interference. So, I got that goin' for me...which is nice.
