DNS-323 stalled
« on: December 24, 2009, 09:59:26 AM »

Got some serious problems with my dns and would appreciate advice. It started when i could not access any of the 1TB caviar green drives, I rebooted several times (as well as router and other devices). If i connect by smb i can see the folders, but it hangs when i try to open any of them (Same by ftp).
Running fw 1.8:5 reseted to factory settings, which took an eternity with flashing mid square led, but no progress. I have no addons at all and no other specials made.
Is disk check an option? shall i try to go back to fw1.7?
Any suggestions are appreciated!

I'd consider taking both drives out of the unit (make sure you mark which side they go back in) and then resetting it to factory defaults and seeing if it's somewhat sane.

I don't see any reason to go back, I've had no issues like this with either 1.08b5 or 1.08b8, can't believe this is just a firmware issue.

What mode are you running, RAID-0, RAID-1, JBOD, or what?

Well, after an hour or so, most functionality is back, that is, it has stopped flashing and is recognised on the network. I can access Volume_2, but it seems to me that the volume 1 is corrupted or simply faulty, I can see the folders but not open them or copy them. It also hit me that I got the amber light a few days back on this drive. Silly of me to wait to do my backup while i still could read the files, but we all done that, haven't we?  ::)
Ill try to get the data back via Ext2IFS if i succeed to mount the drive on my PC, however, would be great if there was a way to run fsck or similar from win, but I guess I need a *nix machine for that? Btw, is the nas's own disk check completely useless or may I try to repair it by running that?

Update: I could not mount the drive in my PC with Ext2IFS and put it back in the 323. Strangely after 5-10 min som of the folders open veeery slowly on my mac with no possibility och copying anything, but when accessed by my PC I actually can copy some folders, although veeeery slowly, will prolly take a few days to copy the 800gb.... Still wondering about the disk check feature in 1.8, should I try that or is it not gonna fix anything?

Recover data FIRST, I really doubt the disk scan is going to do positive things.  Once you have a problem on a drive, the first order of business is to recover any data you need.  Of course, we really shouldn't be having this conversation, you have backups, right?

Oki, I'm slowly gathering data on the drive, terrible slow and once a transmission fails, the remaining files are no longer visible :( Anyways, I have most of the >800GB on other drives and DVDs, but there is much work done with naming and organisation of files that I wish to recover...

Consider this a lesson in the value of backup. ;)

Post Xmas update: I have harvested what could be saved from the faulty drive and tried a Disk Check, it crashed and now report zero content, tried to reformat the drive, but it failed twice with error code 1, whatever that means? No luck in accessing the drive by Ext2Fs on pc, the drive don't even spin up. Indeed it seems like it is a hardware issue, but I would like to try to reformat from  a pc, anyone have tip on how to do that besides Ext2Fs etc?

Well, I'd get the disk diagnostic from the manufacturer and simply do a full surface diagnostic on the drive with it connected to a computer.  First step is to see if the drive is simply dead.

Thanks again for valuable comments! I tested the drive with WD's diagnostic tool, but the drive isn't even recognised, just emitting a faint ticking sound. It is nonetheless good to be able to say when i return the drive that I've tried the diagnostic tool.
I'm just curious now, but would a healthy ext2 formatted drive be visible by a dignostic tool running in windows? Remember that I actually could read some data from the drive while attached to the nas 323..

Hard to understand the mysteries of computer hardware and software some days. :)  I kinda' figured the drive might be toast.  I suspect a replacement might solve your problems, glad you figured it out.
