Can't Even Connect
« on: January 06, 2010, 11:41:51 AM »

I just got my router today and I can connect with wireless G, but no N by itself. I have tried both 2.4 and 5 GHz and neither will connect. Tech support says I need to update my driver  ::)
I have the most up to date driver and still nothing.

I am using a dell XPS with a dell 1505 wireless mini N card with the v5.3.... driver
My router is HW A2 and FW 1.14

Thanks for any help

Have you read this thread about Wireless N?
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=1236.0

I'm using Beta 03 of v1.21 FW however the link applies to all FW versions and should work if you trying to use N. I'm currently using N only as a test for a Mac Book Pro and it's the only device that can use N. Try the process in the link and let us know.

I'm a little afraid of updating to the 1.21 FM cause of all the problems I have heard about. I will try it if that's the only way to get N though, thats the whole damn reason I bought this router was to upgrade to N. Has anyone connected an Xbox 360 with a N adapter to one of these things?

If I read correctly, you're saying that your Macbook Pro with N connects at full speed with the updated firmware?

Yes, My Mac LT is working great over it. If your doing ok at 1.14 then I would stay. If that link doesn't seem to work with v1.14 then, you might have to update. I must say Beta 1.21 03 is really good. I would not use the released version of v1.21NA from the main DLlink web page as it seems to have problems. Stay with what you have or update to v1.1x as updating to v1.21 will prevent you from going back to anything v1.1x. The Wired hangs and boots were fixed in v1.21 Beta 03 and 08. The wireless is ok but still needing some work. Right now N only is pretty good. I went from Beta 08 to 03 since 08 was seeing a lot of disconnects over wireless. Beta 03 has been doing pretty good.

I haven't connected my 360 to wireless however my buddy in OK has his sons on Wireless G only. We tried different modes and G seems to work the best for the MS wireless xbox adapter. He doesn't have an N adapter for it.

Do not listen to FurryNutz and upgrade to 1.21.  You can however safely upgrade to 1.15 which should work fine for you, if you do happen to upgrade or want to.

In fact, for more help with wireless devices and such, you should post your wireless settings from the router so people can help you...

What kind of settings should I have? I've tried N only and nothing seems to work. I have the 20/40 set onto auto and other settings set on auto as well.

Any other suggestions would be helpful.
I think I'm gonna try to upgrade to 1.15 first and try N if that doesn't work I'll try the 1.21 beta 03.

ok, time for an update. First I tried FM v.1.15 with a punch of different settings and no luck with N of any kind, so I said F this and updated the FM to v.1.21 beta 03. The mixed n/g/b works just like the other FM versions, but DING DING DING the 5GHZ mixed N/a setting will let me connect. For some reason the 2.4 GHz setting does not let me connect though.
The N stand alone mode does not work though, just glad it works for now.

Where can I find the D-link wireless utility to confirm that I am operating on N and not a?

Thanks FuzzyNuts, you didn't steer me wrong at all.

Good to hear that ur getting connected. I'm not using a mixed mode but if it works for you. I would start by using default settings and slowly change them. Try each more and see how it goes. I'm not sure if dlink has a wireless utility. However the connection speed should be on the wireless connection icons in the systray if you mouse over it or open the properties and go into Status. Will show you the connection speed. Should be 270 or 300Mb. Mine is 270 on my MBP.

Kewl, sure hope it works better. Also make sure the drivers for the other WiFi devices are up to date, if any, as well. If one side of the wifi is working well and the other isn't, it could still make everything work badly. LOL. Hope for the best. Let us know how it goes.

I have the same HW/FW for dgl4500 originally mentioned, but I use the Dell 1510 wireless N WLAN minicard.  For this to work at the high end speeds, I had to set a setting in the device properties/advanced call BSS Mode to "802.11n Mode", although it still connects to G networks fine.

ah man thanks, I didn't even notice that. No wonder it wouldn't connect in N, it must have been connecting in a. Just switched it over to mixed allowing N. I'll see if that works in a bit.

Installing the N adapter for the Xbox was super easy, I don't even think the xbox used the disc it came with, just popped it on and connected to the network. Connect with N mode only selected. Connected instantly and effortlessly. I think I'm only getting two or three bars and the router is a couple rooms away, thought I would have better range....

Can't speak for speed yet, gaming was basically the same as before and I've just been streaming from my wireless laptop (running on a mode)

So far so good, but I still don't know what to do with my laptop, I've looked for updated drivers, but can't find anything.....

Happy with things for now I suppose.
