Did the beta firmware kill my router?
« on: January 11, 2010, 07:09:32 PM »

I have had all the problems everyone else has been experiencing...especially on the wireless side.  Having to unplug the router to reset it at least once a day is just unsat on a $200 router.  I have had the router for almost a year now and there seems to be no fix in sight.

I just tried v8 of the beta firmware.  It seemed to help me on my wireless side a bit althought I get periods where it gets really slow.  However, after two weeks on the beta I am having trouble on my wired side.  I haven't changed any settings since and my download speeds have dropped to about 50 - 80 kb/s.  If I go to the same site with wireless I pull at least 1 - 1.5 MB/s.  I have reset and rebooted the router to no luck.

I think I am about to give up on D-link since they are having the same problems on there other wireless routers too.  Everyone who has switched over to the Netgear WNDR-3700 seems to be pretty happy with the stability.  Anyone have any other suggestions before I switch or am I just like everyone else waiting around and hoping for a miracle...or at least a fix!

No, both beta 03 and 08 are stable and good on wired. I'm on A1 hardware. Did you do a reset and use default settings after the update? Did you do any configuration?

Well too bad you didn't read the forums before flashing your router else you'd have known about the fw issues plaguing this router.

Yeah, I agree that not looking at the forum was the biggest mistake I made.  I have owned just about every brand of router out there and usually firmware updates make improvements and fix things.  Unfortunatly, this isn't the case for d-link.  When I saw all the glowing reviews on Best Buy I didn't even think to check the forums.  As neat as all the bells and whistles sound (n speed, dual bands, USB storage link, ect.) it really comes down to the stability and dependability that I am missing.

Looking at how long these problems have been going on and the fact that it spans to d-link's other routers gives me low confidence that this is going to be able to be fixed with a firmware update.  I am thinking this is more a hardware issue then a software.  I know I have seen several posts where they think it could be a heat issue.  If that's the case, then no firmware can magically add cooling to the router.  Someone else also mentioned that d-link is just about to come out with their new line of routers.  Maybe they fixed the hardware issues with the new line but since they are not offering any kind of support or replacement for a new one I'm between a rock and a hard place.

I guess you have to look at the level of customer service and given they have left this many customers hanging for a year now is pretty unacceptable.  I don't see how switching to another brand could get any worse customer service wise...I hope I'm not wrong!

I would loaded one of the betas, I'm having great luck with Beta 03. Do a factory reset and don't do any configuration. Check and see if this resolves your issue. I think this router is a pretty good router. Yes, the FW hasn't been the best, however with some simple troubleshooting, I'm sure you'll be able to find out if you need to call DLink or not. IT would be helpful to some of us to post what the details are, like HW and FW versions, resent FW updates and where you got it. Things like this. There's free help out here that's available, let us know if we can help.

The only configuration I have done is turn on the wireless, rename the SSID and add a password for encryption.  Except for those, I left all the other settings alone.  To me, these are basic configuration changes that I need to make.  I need to have wireless so I have to turn that on and I need to password protect it so I'm not supplying free internet to my neighbors.  If the router can't even handle these basic configuration changes then it really leaves me wondering.

Not saying that the router can't handle basic configurations. Just trying to help you trouble shoot with little configuration as possible to find out if it could be HW, FW or setup related. Is wireless working well for you at this time? Both Beta 03 and 08 should be good for wired. Have you setup anything else for the 4500, give details if you can. I know everyone doesn't use all the features or need to. There's probably some things you can turn off. I would regress to Beta 03 FW, do a factory reset, Setup ur Wifi. Turn off WISH, WiFi protected setup, this is different from Encryption. If you don't game, those should be off already out of the box. I would disable all logging accept for Firewall, System and Critical. I might set Firewall settings to EndPoint Independent for both UDP and TCP. I would test each wireless modes, by themselves at first. See if there is a mode that works well by itself. Then try the mix modes. You'll only get N mode connection by using 5Ghz, Auto and AES. If you don't have a need for N mode, then I would use Mixed mode b/g at 2.4Ghz with WPA2 Personal and Auto Encryption. Some things to look at for you. Let us know. Hope this might help.

Frankly I'm about at your point exactly here.  Love the router when it works, but the level of support (or lack thereof) from DLink is glaringly poor.  I would like to see a fix for this, but I don't hold out much hope.

I know I can get much better support from Linsys (Cisco) as it is anyway....might just switch soon to save what sanity I have left!

Ya, sure did, Haven't checked Beta 08 however, I'm still getting some Errors and Zero Packets dropped if I use G mode only on 2.4Ghz. If I used N mode only on 5Ghz, I get packets dropped. Hope this helps DLink more. The Errors are much less than before. Seems like disabling that helps for G mode or mixed maybe. N needs some work I think still.

i'm on a A1 router and since putting on firmware 1.21 I'm losing my internet connection every 4 days. only unplugging the unit seems to bring the internet back. i was running on firmware 1.15 for at least a year without any troubles at all. i always thought it was a decent product until the newest update. enough of the complains. lets try to fix this. i read lots of people are happy with the new beta firmwares. because i can't stand the unplugging any longer i decided to download the newest 08 beta. strangely the file name indicates that it is most likely just for A2 units. " DGL4500A2_FW121NAB08Beta.bin " I'm on an A1 router and don't know which firmware to install. A feedback from A1 users would be helpful. Did you go with 08 or 03 beta?

I've used both and currently on Beta 03. Beta 08 wireless had random disconnects. Beta 03 is good so far on wired. I might try 08 again tomorrow since someone mentioned turning off extended wifi protection and Short G.I. in the Advanced Wireless settings. I'm running N mode only and it's better but still get packet drops and errors. Wired is great on both 03 and 08.

so what did the beta fix if you are saying it's just running 'good'. can i stay connected longer than 4 days or is that still an issue? and you are saying beta 08 brings random disconnects? jesus christ that sounds even worse. who makes these betas? before i install any of them i need to hear something positive. don't wanna totally mess up my machine.

If you used the v1.21NA from the main web site, Put on one of the Betas. The problems that they fixed was with the reboots and hangs with v1.21NA from the main web site. Wireless is pretty good on Beta 03. I'm using it now. I think some of the main problems is Wireless N mode only has some issues which I'm seeing. I tested a work around last nite and Wireless G mode only works great, less errors and no dropped packets. As for N, Beta 03 is ok, but a lot of errors and some dropped packets. I haven't gone back to Beta 08 yet to test this work around for N mode only. Betas are great for wired. Been playing XBL a lot and no issues seen. Good gaming. I'm having to re post the gaming and game fuel settings which will be made stuck to the forums. I'll post the link when it's finished.
