FORUM USER REQUESTS and BUGS
« on: January 18, 2010, 09:22:56 AM »

This thread is in regards to what users of the DGL-4500 would like to request DLink to review and consider adding features to the routers FW and operation. Also this thread includes any reports of bugs that should be reviewed by DLink seen my us users. Please be detailed, concise and tactful when posting the requests and bug details.

Do not arbitrarily post defects or bugs here. Before reporting concerns about defects or bugs, please ensure that troubleshooting of the problem has been thoroughly completed before posting a problem about defects. Not all issues are a defect or bug related. Let other users help you troubleshoot the problem first before posting here.

Demanding anything will not get us anything. There are no guarantees.

Please keep other subjects, topics and questions to other threads and posts. This thread is just a central list of Features and Bugs for review by DLink.

If you like, you can PM me your list and details and I will had them to a list I've started here.  ;)

FEATURE REQUESTS:
1. Add router web page timeout options. (Would help to disable this when working with users in making operations in a slow manor or for those who like to keep the routers page open there browsers for a long period of time.)

2. IPv6 networking support. (Seems the world is running out of IPv4 addresses. Would be helpful to have IPv6 support implemented and supported for us to use. Make it simple to use. ALL OS's from XP to Win 7, Linux's and OSX 10.4-10.6 all support IPv6.)

3. UI notification of disabled parent features. It would be nice to have some UI notifications if a user selects dependent or child feature, to be notified that the parent feature is disabled and to enabled it if the user would like to use the feature. I notice that if I disable something in WiFi or Wish, something in maybe Basic or Advanced, when I go to something in Tools or Device, if I click on a dependent or child feature option that was disabled by the parent, I don't get any notice that this child feature is no longer usable and could lead to a mis-understanding from the users perspective. I remembered that I had disabled something when I selected the child feature and went back to confirm and enabled the parent feature. A notification should be displayed automatically in events like this.

4. Firmware update file process performs a Automatic Factory Reset after the firmware data has been applied. Would be nice to have the update automatically do a factory reset after the data has been applied to the unit. Some end users are not aware of doing a factory reset after the FW update has been applied and they presume that the unit has been wiped and back to factory settings. It would probably be beneficial if this additional reset was handled by the FW update process automatically.

5. Band Width Throttling for specified PCs. Would be nice to be able to throttle back on internet bandwidth on Lan connected PCs for limiting users who do a lot of downloading and streaming while other users are online as well. Seems to be a fair amount of users inquiring about throttling features. Not sure if this would work in conjunction with Gaming and GameFuel features or not. Would benefit those users that game while other users are online downloading or streaming audio or video data.

6. Adding DMZ information regarding the use. Can Dlink add simple details to the Help section or to the DMZ options section referring to that if a device is put on the DMZ, this makes other Gaming, GameFuel and Firewall settings irrelevant. Making users aware that should this be used, that this device would become more susceptible to cyber attacks and the DMZ provides no safety net. The help section is details on what it does however doesn't simply make it easy that any out on the DMZ make other features irrelevant.

DEFECTS:
1. Seems that upon entering the routers password for logging into the web page, then hitting ENTER on the key board, the router does not accept the entered PW and gives a incorrect password message when using Safari and other browsers on Mac OS. Possible Windows OS's as well. Seem that after several tries, the routers web page will accept this operation eventually. Entering the password and then clicking on the login button with the mouse seems to resolve this. The ENTER key on the keyboard should be a valid command and the web page should accept this operation. It was mentioned that Safari was not supported by the router and to use IE or Firefox. Mac OS comes native with Safari and as a end user, Safari should be supported fully by the router. MS does not make a recent version of IE and no longer develops IE for Mac.

2. At 24 MAC entries it said "You cannot add more rules because the table is full. " Need to find out if this is a defect if other rules are not set up in the pool or if there is an actual limitation on setting up the amount of MAC entries you can have.

FEATURE REQUESTS:
1. Add a setting to limit the number of entries in the routers log. For example, I only want the last 100 items in the log to be kept.

2. Allow adding a DHCP Reservation that is outside the DHCP IP Address Range. For example, my Router's DHCP is configured to use 192.0.0.2 through 192.0.0.30. I would like to add a DHCP Reservation for 192.0.0.90.

3. Add a setting to allow pings coming from the Router's WAN Port to be directed to the IP on the DMZ. I would rather my computer on the DMZ respond to pings than have the Router do that.

4. A logout button.

DEFECTS (not really):
1. On the Status page of the Router's firmware, WISH Sessions is shown, even though I have WISH disabled. Clicking it does absolutely nothing. When I was first working with the Router, I thought something was very wrong. Perhaps you could hide the WISH Sessions option or have a page that says "WISH Disabled" instead.

Thank you, FurryNutz, for starting this thread. Lycan, I totally agree with you.

Feature Requests:

1. Native, robust VPN support
2. Guest mode Wifi access. It's odd that the lower-end units offer this, but the 4500 doesn't.
3. The ability to replace the SSL certificate in the router with my own
4. Native IPv6 support (I'll second Furry's request)

Mainly just get the router running where I can use the current features without problems.

1.) It has dual band (2.4 & 5 ghz) already buillt into the router...make it simultaneous.
2.) If possible make it where 5 ghz band can use b & g wireless as well.

1)  Can't be done.  Needs a whole new radio for simultaneous transmission.
2) Can't be done.  G cannot broadcast on 5GHz, and neither can B.

So out of curiousity is the Dir-825 a better router than the DGL-4500? If gamefuel isn't any better than QOS then why wouldn't everyone just buy the Dir-825? The Dir-825 does simultaneous band...only difference is gamefuel vs QOS. You can get them for the same price if you look around. Sorry for going off topic Furry.

GameFuel IS the same as QoS.  Marketing gimmick.  Nothing more.

If you look at that way, then yes...the DIR-825 might be a better buy.  However, I believe it's a bit buggier.  Haven't read the forums in a long while.

Dual band does not necessarily mean it is better by any means.  Just means more work on the device itself.  Sometimes it can even cause problems...ie streaming, dropped packets, etc.  Personally, not worth it.  But hey, if you want a 5GHz band running, and a 2.4..by all means.

BUG-

My DLG-4500 will no longer "re-boot" when I click 'save settings' after making a change... so basically it will not "save" the actual changes...

After "much fiddling around" with it tonight, I finally hit the hard reset button, and it ''allowed me to make/and save some changes, but then it "lost the 're-boot the router' screen" again... (this is the only 'visual change' I notice once it 'stops saving' my changes... other than that the software looks to be 100% nornal)

To clarify, I can hit the "save settings" button, the  router will reset, (the 're-boot' screen will not come up anymore though)--- the router cycles off-line, and I have to log back in. BUT none of the changes I made were actually saved...

I have has this issue for approx 8+ months!

My firmware says 1.15 2008/10/29 (even though I "updated it twice" today to the 1.21na firmware

PLEASE advise how to correct this issue.

thank you!

Bug
Name Discovery Delay- Seems the domain discovery is delayed exactly 14second each hop when DNS  Relay is enabled without static DNS during a traceroute.

Chrome bug- Theres seems to be a bug when you move from the "Gaming" section of the advanced tab to any other section when using chrome. It says "There are unsaved changes..." even if I have not changed a single thing. Problem fallowed the router through factory resets and firmware updates. Doesn't happen in MSIE 6 or FF 3.5

Unicast/Multicast- Not really a bug, but would make alot of sense to have multicast and unicast next to each other. To my knowledge, have both checked is contradictory.

Feature Request

Help Menu: Have the help menu open in a new window by default. Or better yet, have help as second pane in the browser window. That way users can see the help and the router settings at the same time.

Support Links: Have links in the help menu that connect to your support page.

Cookie cutter Config files: Have a web based interface where one selects certain criteria for their selected router and build a config file that you can then download and upload. Not only would it make is easier for the light user(I have a PS3 with this mac address and I would my wireless WPA protected with this passphrase), but also for the support staff. You could just build a config file for the customer rather then walking them through settings. Its a pipe dream, but would separate D-link from the rest.
