Router problems with cable modem?
« on: January 28, 2010, 08:04:13 AM »

Before I go to the clueless cable company, I would greatly appreciate any help that can be provided with my internet problems. I have optimum online (io digital cable) along with "the boost" which pushes my download to 27 down and 5 up. When my internet is working properly, it is ridiculously fast. My problem is that it becomes very sluggish every once in awhile... basically dropping connections in and out. Sometimes I could go 6 months without a problem and then all of a sudden I have a week/month of issues. I work through my computer, so you can see how this might cause me some MAJOR issues. Is there a possibility that something going on with the router could be causing this issue with the cable modem (SBV5120 Surfboard)?

Here is an item in my log that might help. I unplugged/plugged my router to restart it and got the following. The 2 ip addresses listed are mine (through optimum online) and identical. Could my router be misinterpreting something the cable company is doing as an attack? Or am I really being attacked?

[INFO] Wed Jan 27 14:32:02 2010 WAN interface speed measurement aborted as they did not converge
[WARN] Wed Jan 27 14:32:02 2010 Blocked packet from my.ip.address to my.ip.address (LAND Attack)
[WARN] Wed Jan 27 14:31:47 2010 Above message repeated 19 times
[INFO] Wed Jan 27 14:31:47 2010 Wireless link is up

In general, is there anything that I could do that would prevent any issues between my modem and router. Do I turn off the firewall? Is there an ip address I can put in some unblocked range in my router? I am obviously not a router/modem expert, so any help would be greatly appreciated? I am using firmware 1.21NA.

Thanks!

I don't think that's an actual attack, it's more likely that something is mis-configured and is pounding your connect when you start up.

Did you power-cycle the modem at the same time? I know most modems need to acquire configuration information from a head-end server, and if that server is mis-configured it could lead to what looks like an attack.

There are a ton of reasons for a connection to get sluggish. If you torrent, they might be throttling you. If your neighbors are overwhelming the local switch, that would make your connection feel sluggish.

Have you tried using http://www.speedtest.net/ or http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ both when your net feels sluggish, and when it doesn't? http://www.dslreports.com/ has some for-pay monitoring tools that will watch your connection, and give you a graph of it's performance.

Hope this helps,
Hank

Also would be helpful to us if you detailed your HW and how you have it setup. We presume that your going from your cable modem directly into the 4500?

For clarification, sluggish means I can't load a web page. It is either super fast or won't load anything.

My setup is quite simple as I am a novice. So much a novice, that I don't know what HW means. (embarrased)  But yes, the modem is connected directly to the router with no other frills. The only changes I made to the original default options that came with the router where:

*Port Forwarding for the Xbox 360
*Creating DHCP Reservations for all 5 devices on my network (Desktop, 2 laptops, Xbox, Wii).
*Turned off Advanced DNS.

Thanks again.

No worries. We all start somewhere...

HW is simply HardWare. As FW is FirmWare. I guess we need a glossary for this board.

Check out my Gaming and Gamefuel Settings sticky at the top of this forum. Very helpful in streamlining and getting the 4500 to work well.
