ftp download speed very slow
« on: February 03, 2010, 07:28:47 AM »

I'm new at this so bear with me. I've set up my ftp and can access it from out side my network. Now when I want to copy a file from out side the network it takes about 5hrs to download say a gig. Is this a normal transfer speed or do I need to change some setting? I'm behind a linksys router with 10/100 conection. Please help

What transfer speeds do you get from within your network?

There is a good chance that your internet connection is the limiting factor - what upload speed does your ISP allow?

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Is that your download speed?  Remember, when you're accessing a file on the NAS remotely, you're uploading from your NAS location, which is normally the slower speed of an ISP connection.

Well, assuming you hit 100kbytes/sec, which is typical for a 1mbit upstream connection, you should take 2.7 hours to transfer a gigabyte.  5 hours is a bit much, but not out of the question, depending on the quality of the connection.

I agree, you are limited by the upload rate determined by your ISP regardless of your downoad speed outside the network.  My ISP is brutal for upload -  eg: I get 7Mb download and 0.5Mb upload - so pulling anything off the NAS from outside the network is painfully slow.
