1.22NA Wireless
« on: February 04, 2010, 08:06:14 AM »

I keep on getting the following in my log over and over again... every minute. It is my laptop connecting wireless-ly to the router.

myRouter: Wireless system with MAC address ***** secured and linked
myRouter: Wireless system with MAC address ***** associated

Is there something that I could be doing differently, because I am guessing that this should only appear once, not 1000 times.

Presently have:
2.4 mixed n/g/b
auto scan and rate
width is auto 20/40

WLAN Partition : off
WMM Enable : on
Short GI : off

WISH enabled for online gaming

Any help would be appreciated.

Does this happen when using a single mode on wireless, like G mode only on 2.4Ghz? Just seeing if this issue is traveling throughout the wireless. I would turn off WISH since WISH is not used for any gaming processing. Review my Gaming and GameFuel post for info about gaming settings. What kind of PC are you using to connect to the 4500 wireless?

I have not tried it on any other mode, so I will do that and turn WISH off.

I have a Dell Studio laptop running Vista32.

BTW... I am the same guy with the terrible internet problems. After downloading 1.22NA, it has been pretty smooth sailing. I can't even complain about the wireless, because everything seems to work fine from the casual observer using the internet (i.e. my wife). It is just that the logs/statistics show otherwise and I want try to remedy the issue.

Ya I recognize you. Good to hear that internet is working smoothly. Not sure of why your seeing so many entries for this. I notice that I see some however not a lot, only why I turn on and connect on my MacBook Pro. Does this happen with any other wireless devices you connect to the 4500?

It actually doesn't. I only have the problem with my laptop. What could be the issue? My wife's laptop and the wireless xbox adapter works fine.

Only with your LT? I might venture something on your LT causing something. If other devices are working well and your LT isn't. Make sure the drivers are up to date on the LT? Is the wireless the LT built in or 3rd party? Might try a 3rd party WiFi possibly. Like a PCMCIA or USB WiFi?

I actually figured it out. I changed the 802.11 mode to n/g rather than b/g/n and everything was fine with with repetitive associating and linking. I still have a ridiculous amount of packet loss and errors through the wireless though. Not a huge deal due the fast connection, but still annoying to see.

Scratch that. Went right back to doing it a couple minutes later... lol.

Question though... I noticed that my laptop connects to the router using n (at 2.4), but my wife's newer laptop connects using g. Why is this?

Thanks.

Is hers capable of connecting to N networks? If not then could be the reason. Need to find out if hers is N capable. Strange why your seeing this log entries for your LT and nothing else. Wondering if there is a compatibility issue with your LT an this 4500. Doe this do this on every mode only, like if you just used G mode only?

I agree with Furry. You need to see if your wife's adapter is capable of 802.11n...

Even if it's a new machine, a lot of OEM's skimp on the WiFi adapter to shave a few bucks off their costs.

If it is capable, check to make sure that it hasn't been configured for 802.11g or 802.11bg only. I've seen that happen a few times.

Hope this helps,
Hank

The problem I was having with my laptop repeatedly "associating and linking" to the 4500 did not occur when I changed the 802.11 mode to "g only" rather than "g/n" or "b/g/n". Why is "n" causing issues?

I also get this one ip address (72.14.204.83) that repeatedly tries to get through, but obviously cannot with the TCP/UDP blocked by the 4500. Could that have anything to do with the "n" issues I am having?

My wife's laptop was set to receive 802.11g and I can't mess around with it, because it is given to her through the high school where she works.

Not exactly sure why N would be causing any issues or even if it is. You should not by having any issues if you set for Mode G/N 2.4Ghz.

One thing I would do is find or borrow a different N device and see if that is doing the same thing. Turning off everything else to test. Seems like your wifes LT is doing well on G, and yours is having the issue. Another test would be to take your LT to some other access point that you know supports N mode and see if your LT has the same problems. A buddy or something. Could even ask a local repair shop if they have the ability to test WiFi modes. Just helping you get some troubleshooting down to help narrow down the problem here.

The reason your seeing these IP addresses is because the 4500 logs are set to report all events. I too see various IP address being blocked. Means the 4500 is doing its' job. However if that IP address is from your ISP or local to you network then maybe it shouldn't. I would call the ISP and confirm that address to be sure if needed.

In all use only the lowest modes you really need. If nothing around you needs B mode, then use G and N. If you don't need N then stick with G.

Out of curiousity, what is the model of your Dell Studio Laptop and type of wireless card equipped?  Have you gone to Dell support and updated the driver? Reason I'm asking is that we've got a Dell over here that had an issue that happened before I purchased this particular router, but the symptoms sound very similar.  If you haven't updated within the past couple of months, this might get you out of trouble.

Just FYI, I get exactly the same thing with hardware A2, Firmware 1.14.  Mine seems to be associated to a Wii in my network.  Every minute or so I get (via a syslog server, I removed my SSID and MAC addresses where appropriate):

Have you tried G mode only with Transmission Rate to Auto or pick a speed?

I have not.  My environment has g, n and b devices, I need to support all.  Note that I don't seem to have any errors associated with this, I just get log messages.  Odd, but performance wins over odd :-)
