Any firmware that works with gbit WAN?
« on: February 04, 2010, 12:53:16 PM »

I'm kind of desperate, is there any firmware that works with a gbit WAN?
Support tells me, that they are working on it, but isn't there some beta/alfa/custom firmware that works with gbit WAN?

Support for gbit WAN is one of the major reasons why I bought this router.

not for this gateway. I imagine for marketing and business reasons, you will see a new model come out.

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_chart/Itemid,189/ both hardware revisions show a WAN to LAN throughput higher than 100mbps, thus proving they both support gigabit WAN. Hardware revision A1 was tested with F/W 1.01NA and B1 with F/W 2.02NA. Latest firmware revisions may not perform as such for marketing or business w/e, but why keep the 1000mbps selection in the firmware if so? Can you tell us what seems to be the problem with your routers WAN port, does it not get exactly 1gig(125MB/s) and only performs closer to the speeds shown in the benchmark chart? It only provides headroom for higher than 100mbps performance, the hardware can't provide full gigabit speeds no matter the firmware revision.

If connected to Gbit WAN, the maximum speed the router can achieve is cca. 15Mbit/8Mbit. 100Mbit WAN works just fine with speed over 95Mbit.

According to support, this is known issue. That's why I'm asking here.

Btw. the revision is B1.

Seemed to work fine with F/W 2.02 for B1 H/W as the benchmark chart shows

Looks like you're testing an internet connection, how fast should it be? 100Mbit? Only need gigabit functionality if your source is faster than 100Mbit. If your ISP is delivering 100Mbit and you're testing at 95Mbit with 100Mbit setting(no limitation) that's superb, why worry about it? Some speed test sites can't be reliable in testing such large amounts of bandwidth as well. Could it also be 15MBytes(120Mbit) for which you were confused?

I'm using a Motorola SB6120 Cable Modem which has Gigabit Ethernet. The Ethernet connection indicator lights blue (meaning port speed is Gigabit) when connected to my DIR-825 Wan port.  I'm on a Docsis 3 cable network and am getting 63 Mbit down and 6 Mbit Up speeds with NAT routing between WAN/LAN ports.  So I think its working fine.  Rev B1, Firmware 2.02NA

Update: 2018
FYI, there are two differences between Gb Ethernet and Gb support speed from ISPs. Gb Ethernet is a physical connect rate speed between one device and another. Here it's the modem's RJ45 port rated at 1000Mb or 1Gb and the DIR routers WAN/LAN RJ45 ports rated at 1000Mb or 1Gb. This is a physical connection rate only. Has nothing to do with actual data throughput ISP speeds. 2010 era there wasn't any supporting 1Gb ISP WAN speeds. This didn't come to pass until about 2015 est era and beyond.
Theoretical ISP WAN speeds for the SB6120 were:
 WAN throughput:    172 Mbps
 WAN throughput upstream:    131 Mbps

Current SB series modems that support actual 1Gb WAN ISP speeds is the SB6190, SB8200 from Arris. Most current modems dated 2008 era or after, usually have RJ45 ports that support 1000Mb or 1Gb physical connection rated ports.
