LAN side addressing issue
« on: February 12, 2010, 03:08:22 PM »

The following pertains to a D-Link DIR-655 router.

Is there a way to allow a laptop with a hardcoded IP address of 192.168.1.96 access to the internet without changing the router’s default IP address of 192.168.0.1 or the default DHCP IP address range of 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199?

Whenever I change the router’s IP address (192.168.1.1) and range (192.168.1.10 thru 192.168.1.99) to coincide with the laptop’s hardcoded IP address all the desktops and laptops (including the one causing the issue) on the network find the router just fine, but I receive the following critical error:

“The addressing of the Internet side learnt thru DHCP conflicts with the addressing selected for the LAN side.  Internet communications will be disabled until you have changed the LAN side addressing to resolve the problem.”

Is there something in my modem (Westell WireSpeed Dual Connect from Bellsouth) that I need to change?  Its IP address is 192.168.1.254.

I have yet to figure out what router (or modem) parameter to change to resolve this issue.  I am truly stumped.

probably you left the routers address on 192.168.1.1

Set the range to 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.99

Maybe even below the range in use by your laptop.

Hi,

I would look at this slightly differently as I believe the westell dsl modems also act a router, you you can set the DIR-655 as dynamic IP from the modem or you can set the modem to bridge mode and set the DIR to use PPPoE mode and enter the login information so the DIR handles the DSL login duties....

I have seen it done both ways with no performance issues either way.

Normally I change the LAN IP range on the DIR to 192.168.0.X so it doesn't conflict with the dsl modem (router).

Is there some specific reason you have the one client locked into that specific IP addy ?

If you change the LAN side to 192.168.1.x , both - LAN and WAN of the router see addresses on the same subnet and this can't work.
If you have the possibility to switch your modem address to i.e. 192.168.2.254, there would be no problem anymore to set the router's LAN to 192.168.1.1.

You might be able to use the alternate configuration properites of the network adapter. Get into the adapter settings and right click it and select properties.   Where you see IPv4 highlight that and select the propeties button, you will see a tab called alternate configuration, where you can put a secondary IP address on the adapter.

After viewing the responses here, going over the documentation for both the modem and router and several Google searches for this issue, I was finally able to rectify the problem.  In hindsight it was a much simpler fix than I first thought.

All I had to do was go into the modem’s DHCP Server Configuration (via Expert Mode) and change the IP address to 192.168.0.254 from 192.169.1.254 and change the DHCP Start and End Addresses to 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.253, respectively.  I then changed the router’s IP address to 192.168.1.1 and range to 192.168.1.10 thru 192.168.1.99, and everybody was happy.

Thanks for everyone’s input.

Regards.
