DHCP Reservation VS Static IP
« on: February 20, 2010, 01:18:54 PM »

OK what the difference between then two and which one is good because I have xbox 360 open nat using UPnP not using port forward. Is it good to reservation you IP or not because I heard that if you dhcp reservation it make stuff quicker.

DHCP is easier to setup a bunch of computers because you don't have to worry about which has which IP address.  Static can sometimes be better, especially with a lot of network traffic, because you can use port forwarding to prioritize certain traffic on those ports to the static IP, but port forwarding doesn't work with DHCP (at least to my knowledge, because you won't know where to forward to).  You can also do both by limiting the DHCP reserved addresses to a certain range, I use 100-199 for that, even though I'm sure I'll never have 100 computers connected.

DHCP reservation inside the network is better than setting a static IP inside the Xbox. With UPnP, however, neither is really necessary, and odds are that any speed differences anyone may have reported were purely coincidental. DHCP lease time is typically 24 hours long, so the most your IP address will change is one time per 24 hour period.  Best to leave it alone.

I would use Static IP reservations, however if you doing have a lot of connecting devices then DHCP would be good too. Using Static IP reservations just ensures your getting the same IP address all the time and in some cases helps in troubleshooting. I have 15 devices on my network and it's nice to know what device is being used and where it's at.  ::)
