Wireless connection resets every couple minutes
« on: February 24, 2010, 08:41:19 AM »

I bought a DIR-655 yesterday and am having some problems with the wireless connection.  I had an old Microsoft Wireless B router and never lost connection from any devices.

These are the components of my system -

DIR-655 w/Firmware 1.32NA
Windows Vista Desktop - via wired connection
Windows 7 Netbook - via internal wireless n card
Canon Wireless Printer - via wireless
Wii - via wireless

Everything connects fine and I get network access from each device.  The Wii and printer seem to have a constant connection but its hard to tell since its not constantly accessing the network like my netbook is.  The netbook will work fine for a couple minutes.  Then my network will drop off the available networks list and then come back on a moment later.  It did this continually for over an hour last night.

I set the laptop to automatically connect to my network and to connect even if SSID is not being broadcast.  I also set up the laptop to WPA, AES, and put in my network key.  I tried changing all of the security settings on both the laptop and the router to see if that made a difference but it didn't seem to matter.

Here are the current settings on my router -

Wireless Radio :  Enabled

802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b

Channel Width : 40MHz

Channel : 1

Secondary Channel : 5

WISH : Active

Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Configured

Guest Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Not Configured

Security settings : WPA2 - Personal.

Upgrade to 1.33NA.
Much more stable in every way.

I personally have a A4 model which was rebooting with 1.21EU, 1.31EU and all the 1.32NA betas.
Even downgrading back to 1.21EU some weeks ago did not resolve things.

Running 1.33NA now (i am in the EU however) and it is stable for up to 8 days (best cycle).

Maybe this also works for your new device.

ok, so I "upgraded" to the 1.33NA firmware.

Still having same problem.  Will probably try switching to WEP and see if that helps.

Have you tried other wireless modes only N/G instead of also B.

WPA2 as i know seems the one to use.

Did you check on latest drivers on the wireless clients in your laptop/desktop??

Maybe also check on usage of the wireless channel. Maybe there are more devices close to you using same frequency.

Do you see wireless restarts in your log??

And make sure your SSID of the DIR-655 is unique. So that there is no mixup with naming and therewith assigning to the router (this happened to my sisters router using the default Linksys ssid in her of coarse Linksys wrt54G) !!

Try shutting down WISH and all the protected features first. Makes live easier to find the root cause.

I’m having nearly the same problem but my connection usually doesn’t reset. I just replaced my Linksys WRT54G router with a D-Link Dir 655.  Everything is working fine except my desktop which uses a WMP54g PCI adapter.  I won’t go into the problems I had getting the adapter to even see the router. I was in it a whole day before I could connect at all.  Now I’m getting dropped off every 5 minutes or so on the desktop only.  I have changed the mixed setting to n and g and turned off channel scanning per another post in a related issue but it made no difference.  I left the Linksys router connected to the new D-link and my Desktop will still connect to that router for days without dropping out.  When I carry my laptop into the office next to the desktop the signal strength on the laptop is about 38% and about 34% for the desktop.  The connection drops off so frequently the connection is unusable.  When it burps it usually won’t even reconnect without intervention.  I had to put the profile of the Linksys WAN to manual or the desktop will switch to the old router and stay there.  Why is this happening?  I have 4 other devices that work fine.  The drivers on the WMP54g are up to date and reloaded but it made no difference.

Check the wireless output.
Should be on 'high'.

Levels are low so disconnects are to be expected.
Also check your SSID of the router is unique in your area. Duplicate SSID can also cause the clients to reconnect to other same named routers.

Ok, so I changed the security settings to WEP and everything seems to be working fine now.

I did change the output mode to N/G... no more B.

Would like to be able use WPA2 but can live without it.

A friend of mine has the same router, and his seems to work without a hitch.

I'm still having the same issue.  I checked power output and it is set to high which is the default.  I live out in the country so no duplicate SSIDs. I have read the reivews of the D-link PCI n adapter and they make me a little nervous so that upgrade may not end up solving my problem either.  The desktop machine with the WMP54g PCI adapter card is the machine where printer sharing in enabled.  The connection of that machine to the Dir-655 is so intermittent that I can't print a document from any of the laptops.  I am still puzzled since every other device connects rock solid and I haven't had to reset the router since it was purchased.  Maybe it just doesn't like Linksys.  Are there others that are using this combination successfully?  Any other thoughts are always appreciated.
