DIR-825 wirelessly connected to DGL-4300
« on: February 27, 2010, 03:29:55 PM »

I have cox for my isp with a Motorola modem. Previously I had 1 DGL-4300 directly connected to the modem and the other DGL-4300 on the other end of the house wirelessly communicating to each other. I have a laptop which I use the wireless connection for, and then my desktop was wired to the 2nd router along with 2 network printers. There is also a network storage link with 2 NAS drives wired to the 1st router. Everything had worked fine and I had internet and network wherever I was in the house and on whichever computer. (My ex-husband was the one that configured the routers, I only added on to the network, but did not have the administrator password to alter or view configurations).

Then the 1st DGL-4300 died. So I replaced it with the DIR-825 since I figured it was better technology, etc. This then meant that I had to reset the 2nd router in order to configure everything together. I have the DIR-825 working fine using dynamic ip and dhcp with the range of .100 to .199. I modified the ip address of the DIR-825 to .2 to try and avoid conflicts. And I reserved the ip address for my laptop and network storage link. It all works great at the one end of my house via the laptop (either LAN or WAN).

However, once I try to add the DGL-4300 to the mix, things don't work. I figure that I must have some setting incorrect on the DIR-825 because once I connect the DGL-4300 and it comes with the default ip address, I can't connect to the web based management or even ping it until I disable the wireless connection. I have tried various setups on the DGL-4300 with dhcp disabled and enabled and with an ip address both outside and inside the dhcp range of the DIR-825 to no avail. Sometimes it doesn't work at all and other times I get an error message about the address conflict: “The addressing of the Internet side learnt thru DHCP conflicts with the addressing selected for the LAN side.  Internet communications will be disabled until you have changed the LAN side addressing to resolve the problem.”

I have read other "similar" posts dealing with this issue and have tried those suggestions, but it still doesn't work. Any other suggestions? I called dlink and the "Senior Level Support" person basically told me that it couldn't be done. Obviously it can be done because it was before (my office also has the same configuration set up by my ex so maybe I should go there and try to guess the password to see what the configuration is). She said I could try and call back on Monday to speak to the next higher level technical support but she thinks they will tell me the same thing. Obviously there are easier ways to configure the network with different or additional hardware, but I'd really like to work with what I have already.

BTW, the hardware on the DIR-825 is B1 and the firmware is 2.02NA. The firmware on the DGL-4300 is 1.9.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
