After days of pulling hair out with computer shutting down after every 5-8 minutes up, testing for viruses, hardware issues etc.....
Amazingly its the Router that is shutting down my PC!!!!
Have repeated test many times. At first I thought it was an internet attack since no shut down when not connected
But if I bypass the DIR655 direct to computer all is well -no shut down. Within seconds if I switch the computer to the router via and plug it in on LAN port 1 the computer shuts down. And of course connecting the cable modem to router (using Cox Business Cable)
I switched to LAN port 2 (on router) and at least at first no shut down. BUT can't access modem set up (want to see if any clue from logs), LAN printers don't work and wireless send signal but can't connect. BTW wireless was working fine during shutdown of main computer. WAS is the key.
When I changed hooking the computer to port 2 per ipconfig it changed the IP address of the modem from the usual (Default Gateway) from 192.168.0.1 TO 70.164.249.65 and printers don't work and again wireless "seen" from laptop but can not connect.
I did a factory reset. Same issue shuts down computer if connect to now it seems either port 1 or 2 on the LAN. So is worse.
I downloaded latest firmware but can't install since I can't get to the router via the new 70. IP and can't use the 192 since as soon as I connect to port 1 which showed that... computer shutdown.
It doesn't reboot on its own just a fast shutdown with no warning or error messages.
This is the 2nd DIR-655 that has worked for about 6 months and than fails.
I've been down about 2 days and am desperate to get working since used for business. I will probably try another DIR 655 (or another brand). I tried another brand but didn't work with TIVO desktop etc. DIR655 has always worked great..for about 6 months than has some issue.
I am of course at wits end after 2+ days of trying to find source of shutdown thinking virus or hardware. Have run 5 different virus/maleware/spyware programs and all show clean. Did a memory test overnight that was clean. Only shuts down when Windows (XP SP3) loaded not Linux test software. One of my crashes wiped out all my USB device drivers so had no mouse or keyboard working so can not hit "OK" when plug and play wants to install generic drivers. Finially found a PS2 keyboard (hard to find).
But now it is clear its the router that is shutting down the computer.
