I am sharing my internet connection with a roommate and want to control the speed at which he connects to the internet. I am using a DIR 655 router, and he has a DWA 552 wireless card. My internet connection is already relatively slow, so I want to make sure that I can still get most of the speed and I'll give him less. I pay the bill, and he won't give me a penny, so I need to do this. I have already disabled WISH so that my wired connection gets priority, but what else can I do that is relatively simple. I definitely wouldn't consider myself to be a network expert, so please try to give me as much detail as possible.

You prioritize IP's/ports somewhat (QoS), but that's about it. Have you considered: pay up or forget about access? Just set MAC address filtering and he won't know what hit 'm.

Well, I like EddieZ's idea the best, but if you're into free Internet, then you could use the QOS engine rules feature I suppose to make their IP address a low priority (high number).  Assign their PC an IP address that doesn't change and you'll always have priority (supposedly; I have not tried it.)

But remember that this does not control the maximum available bandwidth. only at given times this will put you in front only temporarily. But usually you will still suffer from limited upload bandwidth and high ping.

Some ideas if you just want to slow him down-

unscrew the antennas
set the wireless to run on b mode only (not g or n)

But the best idea would just be to add a password or block his MAC like EddieZ said. Give him nothing till he splits the bill.

Is there more people sharing this connection? Because if its just you and him why even connect a router at all?
