UPnP AV Server Hangs 1.08
« on: March 22, 2010, 01:44:30 PM »

I updated to v1.08 firmware today only to find out that I embarked on an epic journey that led to rolling back the firmware to v1.07.

The UPnP AV Server freezes at 8% then the drive is inaccessible
The iTunes Server builds its library quickly without any problems.
After rebooting the DNS-323 the iTunes and UPnP libraries automatically rebuild and the uPNP AV Server locks up at 8% over and over.

How do I go about determining what is causing this?

I ended up rolling back to v1.07 as a result though I really want to add the secure FTP available in 1.08.

Thanks,
Kevin

It doesn't like a particular file.  Half-split your library and go from there.

Find the one file in 15,000 that's causing it to hang? That sounds like fun.

What Egoist is suggesting (I think) makes sense. You split your library in half, and try to catalogue the first half. If it dies again, the problem file is in the first half, only 7,500 files.  :)

Split that half again, (3725!) now test the first part, one quarter of the total. If it doesn't die, the problem file is in the second quarter. Split that one, rinse, repeat. You shoud be able to narrow in on the (hopefully only one) problem file fairly quickly that way.

... insert witty tagline here ...

Maybe someone else who has rectified this problem can give some pointers. What file types caused problems? Where the file names the problem? Was using characters like $, #, or % a problem. Was the file name length a problem. Any pointers would be appreciated. I too have a large mp3 collection and spiting the files would still take an enormous length of time. Thanks for any tips.

Does anyone know what characters may cause problems in the file names or MP3 tags?
I was able to get 1.08 running but had to reset the default settings to get the UPnP Server to shutoff.

Ideally the firmware would better handle invalid characters to avoid the DNS-323 from hanging.

Try avoiding any special charaters....
try to stick to :
  • Hyphens -
  • parentheses ( )
  • underscores _
  • periods .
  • spaces

and avoid the rest

I had this exact same problem with a consistent percentage at which UPnP refresh would hang.  I suspect that it could be some files with non-standard characters, and I know I have at least one file named with an extended German character set.  I plan to rename this file to see if that makes any difference.

Kevin (filemakerguy), were you ever able to identify your problem?  I'm currently still rolled back to 1.06.
