DNS-323 FTP Set up
« on: March 25, 2010, 07:13:24 AM »

I have read many posts regarding setting up FTP with the DNS-323, but I still have been unsuccessful.  Below is how I have set up the server/router and what I am trying to do:

-there is a static IP address for the server (I used the default address - do I need to change it?)
-I have set up a user with a password to access the root folder
-the port under the FTP server settings is 21
-report external IP in passive mode is not checked (I tried checking it and the local access would not work - not sure what IP address to enter if this needs to be checked)
-allow SSL & TSL connections only is not checked (I tried checking it and the local access would not work)
-ddns setting is enabled on the server (not the router)
-server address is www.DynDNS.org (Free)
-host name is 'my username'.dlinkddns.com
-user name and password is the username I set up at dlinkddns.com (I am not exactly sure how this part works - do I need to type in the host name to access the FTP from outside of my network and do I need to put in the server address on the dlinkddns settings on the website?)
-IP address of server is forwarded in the router with a port 21 open under both TCP and UDP
-I can access the FTP on the local network by typing in 'ftp://server ip address' in Mozilla Firefox or windows explorer
-I tried doing the same thing outside of my network, but was unsuccessful - I also tried Filezilla and this was not successful either (entering the server IP address)

I tried following the many posts dedicated to this topic, but I could not figure out where I went wrong.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If accessing from outsie your lan you need to enter the external IP address...
or your 'my username'.dlinkddns.com

Also you must configure you FTP client to use PORT mode instead of passive...
If you want to use PASV (passive) mode, then you will need do the following:
  • check "report external IP" and put in your external IP address
  • make a forward rule in the router for the passive mode ports defined in the DNS-323
If it still does not work... it's possible that your ISP is blocking port 21..

I did not see an option for PORT mode so I am trying to use passive mode.  I checked the "report external IP" box, but I am not sure which IP address to put in there (I used the IP address that was showing in my dlinkddns account).

I am not exactly sure what IP address to put in the dlinkddns account either.  I noticed that is changed today (I am on another network now) from yesterday when I was at home.

Also, if everything was set up properly, do I just type in my user name.dlinkddns.com in a web browser to access the FTP server from another network?  Or do I type in ftp://server ip address in a web browser?

Is there a way to map the ftp server in my computer?  I can provide screen shots if it would help.

Thanks in advance for any help you could provide.

Port Mode will be available in the FTP CLIENT configuration settings... not the DNS-323
And Yes You need to put the IP that dlinkddns reports you.

I am not exactly sure what IP address to put in the dlinkddns account either.  I noticed that is changed today (I am on another network now) from yesterday when I was at home.
dlinkddns should report the current networks IP you are accessing the site from...
Meaning if you are at home it will give you your home external IP address
But if you are alsewhere, it will report that sites external IP.

Also, if everything was set up properly, do I just type in my user name.dlinkddns.com in a web browser to access the FTP server from another network?  Or do I type in ftp://server ip address in a web browser?
You will need to type ftp://yourusername.dlinkddns.com
NOT the IP you gave to the DNS-323.. .(ie: ftp://192.168.0.32  <-- Will only work from inside your network)

Is there a way to map the ftp server in my computer?  I can provide screen shots if it would help.
I don't understand what you mean by mapping the FTP serer?
Do you mean mapping a Drive letter to the DNS-323 ? If so, "Yes You Can"... juste use Windows "Map Network Drive" and select the letter you want and click on the browse and browse to the desired folder in the DNS-323

If you mean access the FTP from inside your network... just type in  ftp://192.168.0.32  (or your DNS-323 IP address)
