They appear in almost every folder on my DNS-323 despite having my folder options set to "hide system and files and folders"... My brother has a DNS-323 with exactly the same firmware version and he doesn't get the "$RECYCLE.BIN" folders on his network so there must be some way to stop them appearing (his was just that way by default when he set it up). I also get lots of "desktop.ini" files that can't be hidden.

I was running Vista on all machines but have just upgraded to Win7 64 on all if that makes any difference?

My Understanding is that you can not have a "recycle bin" protected drive in the DNS-323 since it a network drive....
Also "normal" windows hidden or system attribute are not supposed to work in the DNS-323 because its using a Unix filesystem... ext2 or ext3
So I don't know how you got the $RECYCLE.BIN folders in there....
I guess the only way around this would be to run the following command from
a Administrator Command Prompt in the folder that contains the $RECYCL.BIN folder
"RD /S $RECYCLE.BIN"

I also guess that this can be put in a batch file to delete that folder from everywhere in your DNS-323

I'm having a hard time imagining how you got all those recycle bin folders over there as well!.

The previous post assumes you have access to the Linux command prompt using something like fun_plug.  I wonder if you could just put that command in the fun_plug file and restart the NAS, then delete the file?

The command mentioned above is a WINDOWS command prompt command, not a Linux shell command.

Yep its a Windows Command....
Just map the drives to a letter
Open up a Command Prompt window:
Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Right Click on "Command Prompt" --> Run As Administrator
type the letter you mapped to followed by a colon ... ie.:  Z:
Then type in the command
RD /S $RECYCLE.BIN

or just manual delete all the $RECYCLE.BIN  using Explorer....
The thing with the command is that you can use in a batch file and make it delete all the $RECYCLE.BIN every where in a particular drive....

I don't think the deleting will work - I've tried manually deleting before and they just reappear next time I delete something from the folders?! *edit* actually if I delete one and then just refresh in the folder it reappears *edit*

Maybe I should format the drives and restore from my backup?

I got them also, mostly in first level directories. They all contain desktop.ini in them which contains:

[.ShellClassInfo]
CLSID={645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-8964

If I delete the directory they reappear instantly with the same file which contains the same contents.

I did a google search and found this http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-6090574.html, it talks about vista and network recycle bin so I don't know if Windows 7 has the same options that Vista does.

Well I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
And my RecycleBin Properties does not show the "Network" tab...
dunno if it's because is not supported in 7... or because its just not activated...

Win7 seems to have similar network recycle bin options. I have my Documents, Pictures, Music folders etc from my profile directory mapped straight to the NAS and if you go into properties on the desktop recycle bin you can choose to not have a recycle option for all the profile folders. Tried this before though and it doesn't make any difference - they are still there and reappear if you delete...

Well I tried reformatting my DNS-323, restored from a backup (without the RECYCLE.BIN folders) and when I deleted a file on the NAS the $RECYCLE.BIN folders came straight back...

Any other ideas?

issue might not be wit the DNS-323... but a setting on your Windows install... or the way you are using the DNS-323....

Do you have by any change remapped any special Windows Folders to the DNS-323
by special I mean like the USER or the "My Documents"...
If so... try removing these mapping.... delete the RECYCLE.BIN folders and see if they come back...

Or if you have an other Windows computers... try removing yours from the network.. and check with the other one to see if the RECYCL.BIN comes back after deleteing them
