Please feel free to add whatever fixes you'd like to see. Hopefully D-Link will review and incorporate them into the next firmware release.

1) Have an automatic refreshing option for the UPnP server. (or at least once a day or something)  In addition, have the ability to select the specific drive(s) AND folders that are refreshed.  For example, I have two 1TB drives in standard configuration, volume1 is what I work in, volume2 is used to backup volume1.  I only want the UPnP server to refresh volume 1 AND to only look in certain folders.  (i.e. no need to go through 2,000+ folders of excel files, word docs, databases,etc.

2) Have better backup software.  Current backup software only allows one "level" of backup.  For example, I have the NAS set to automatically backup my volume1 -> volume2 once weekly.  The only problem is that each week any file(s) that change overwrite the previous file.  In short, I only have 1 week of backup.  I've never seen backup software without the ability to have 10 or so "levels" or incremental changes in files.

My two cents are as follows:

1. Optimize the code in order to maximize network throughput while retaining data reliability.
2. The E-Mail Alerts, fix the daily log to work.

For the first item, one way to go is to organize the software by modules and only load those when are enabled.  This would free up valuable RAM for use as a cache.  I do fully understand that the largest thing hampering throughput is the CPU in this device, but through code optimization that could lead to better throughput.

Here is my two cents.

1.  Enable SFTP over SSH/SSL on the unit.
2.  Fix the backup routine so it runs reliably and enable it to backup from the NAS to another network device.

Unfortunately I doubt there will be another firmware update.  I'd be shocked if there was.

Why not just run RAID1 configuration?

I know it is fault tolerance, not backup... if you have the room, use the backup with RAID1 as well.

I'm sure someone else will chime in about raid not being a substitute for backup, but imagine a scenario where the power supply zapped the dns321 and ruined both drives...

Imagine a scenario where you simply mistakenly delete a folder.  Imagine a scenario where you get a virus that deletes the contents of the drive.

In either case, both copies of the data are gone in an instant.

We'll keep saying that RAID of any level is not backup until is sinks in for all concerned.

1) Add support for longer file names; I have issues periodically where the combination of directory structures and file names is longer than the file system can handle.  May be an insurmountable limitation of EXT, but if there was an overlay by the NAS to fix/workaround it, it would be helpful.  This is especially important when I'm saving computer images as a backup (no, not my only backup - they exist in multiple places).  The long directory structures, and unique strings of many of the XML and related files in system images, often give me a "the file name and directory names are too long for the destination" when copying.  But I can't rename backup structures or the backup image becomes useless.  This would be a big thing.
2) Improve network throughput.  This is a gigabit device that is no faster than a 10/100 device.  Even when I use a gigabit router that is only connected to the NAS and the gigabit port on my computer, the NAS is the bottleneck.
3) Support especially for the "hidden" file attribute - actually hide files flagged this way in Windows (I hate seeing all the desktop.ini's, etc...)
4) Defragmentation utility.
