Hi ping rate

I tested my vista laptop for latency, wired into the router dir 615 and into the modem, modem results were a 0% packet loss, 19ms ping and 1ms jitter ( www.pingtest.net ). When wired into the router i got 2%packet loss, 394ms ping and 96ms jitter. I have the latest firmware and that doesn't seem to make any difference.
Anyone know what I can do with the router to fix this latency? other than bin the router!
