Hi all. I've posted a few times here, but most have them were about firmware 1.21 issues. Had numerous drops and general router lameness. Now I have a 1.22 firmware. Barely any wireless drops, so doing well there. However, general browsing and internet activity feels "slow". I know this sound noobish, but I'm not. I had a Linksys prior and it delivered more of a seamless internet experience. With this one I always have a "lag" before a page pops up. Often, the browser will pause (any browser) for about 15sec and then resume - almost like there was some kind of a DNS issue.

Are there features on the 4500 that might cause this? Should I disable GameFuel? I really don't want to throw this against the wall like the other poster, but I'd like a solution. Thank you!

Edit: Noticed this post: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=12124.0 -- I wonder if there are some shady cables being used in my house. Curious if there are known issues with lag in using 1.21 drivers though.

My first try of ver 1.22 did not go well.  I was experiencing random re-boots.  I fixed it by doing a factory restore, then reloaded 1.22 and this time I did not reload my configuration file.  I did all the changes manually.  After that day, the router has been stable.  I was considering to replace it with the WNDR3700 but now that it's working fine, it's hard for me to justify spending another $159.00.

I would definitely check all cabling including the ISP cabling coming into the house. What ISP services are you using? Cable or DSL? DSL is notorious for having issues with cabling and also with there modems. Check out My ATT DSL posting on here.

Cable modem systems can degrade if a lot of splitters are used in line. Try to keep them down to minimum or zero. Lan cables should be ok however can go bad. It's not expensive to get all new stuff. Even to upgrade to CAT 6 internally. I just did my network for about $$20-30 bucks and I have peace of mind that at least the house network is good to go for a long time. I ran a 1ft from my cable modem to the 4500. A 2ft from the 4500 to my switch.

I use the Gaming and Gamefuel settings on my system however if you don't game then you really don't need to turn them on or use them. It should work well for general Internet either way. You can still use some of the items posted there for setting up the router.

v1.21 FW was not a good FW release. I've been using v1.22NA and it's been working great and sure fixed a lot of issues that v1.21 had.

Thanks. I have Comcast Cable - in the northeast (Boston area). Had them out a couple months back. While they weren't pleased with the cable used in the house (prev owner), they said my signal to the modem was fine. I think I need to spend a day or so ripping and replacing which prob won't happen anytime soon. Thanks for the feedback!

Troubleshooting is all about isolating. No point in ripping out wires and spending alot of time and money, if your signal levels are good. And there is a easy way to check your signal levels with most cable modems.

1. Power all computers/routers/modems off
2. Connect a Ethernet directly from the modem to whatever PC we will be using in this test.
3. Turn on modem. (Wait 60sec or until the lights look like they normally do)
4. Turn on the PC
5. Open up a browser windows and type in the address bar:  Http://192.168.100.1
6. Look for a button/tab/area that mentions signal or connection.
7. Compare those signal levels with those at this site:  http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5862
8. Go here:  http://myspeed.visualware.com/     and pick the city closest to you.
9. **Click on Begin test in the top left corner**
10. Run this test 3 times, roughly 1 hour apart.
11. Reply back with your signal levels, speedtest results, and modem's model number and get back to me.

Check to see if you have DNS relay enabled on the Basic\Advanced Networking section. If you do, you can try to manually specify the DNS servers on the computer(s) experiencing the lag. You can find these on the status page that comes up after logging into the router. Since I have yet to figure out how to specify my ISP's DNS servers in the DHCP section, I've been setting them manually on the computers that frequently browse the internet.

I agree. I love it when people say their internet feels like dial up. Usually means they are less then knowledgeable about the nature of such things.
