Unwanted device on my network
« on: April 04, 2010, 04:43:32 PM »

Hello,
I have a DIR-655 and have been using it for about 3 days now. I notice that every once in a while another wireless router is attaching itself to my network. I use my router for home use only and set it up that way with Windows 7. I also went into the router settings and set up the wireless security. I don't understand why or how it keeps showing up. I want it to stop. My version is an A4 and originally I had firmware 1.31na and speeds were great but I noticed the foreign device. I then upgraded to 1.33na and with that firmware I don't seem to get the constant speeds that I did with the other firmware version and on top of that it did not change the matter with the foreign device getting on my network. This is really upsetting me. For one I think I am going to put firmware 1.31na back on it for the better connections unless anyone has any advice in the matter. Secondly if anyone could help a networking noob out, I really need to keep this parasite off my network. Right now I simply power cycle the router and it boots the other router from my network. That is until the jerk that is doing it realizes and reconnects. :/ Thank You in advance for your help.

Hi,

You have to determine what wireless security you are setting up.  Refer to the forum stickie about obtaining 300 Mbps speeds.

Secondarily, and probably not the issue is that maybe your neighbor has somehow put a key logger on your pc and is able to read your security passphrase(s); I know this is not likely the situation, but who knows these days.

Are you using a wireless printer perhaps ?  The device youy are seeing may well be something normal but it is not obvious....

Is the other router taking information from your router, or just showing up on your computer as an available wireless network?

If its the second one, this is normal as the other router is just broadcasting its SSID and your computer is picking that up.  It doesn't mean its invading your network, it's just floating out there like all other radio transmisiions.

Hello and thank you both.

The other router is showing up where I actually look up my network. On Windows 7 I go to Computer and then select Network on the left. It shows up right beside my router under network infrastructure. No I don't have a printer nor anything else wireless except my 2 laptops and they show up at the top. I don't socialize with my neighbors so I hope that the keylogger isn't the issue. lol I did the advice posted in the 300 mbps sticky. I changed it from mixed to N only and so far so good. The only thing that I am running into now is that even though the internet drops are less I still seem to get dropped randomly. Before my wife and I would both lose internet at the same time. Now one of us will lose internet and about an hour or so later the other would lose internet. I guess it is an improvement. I checked the wireless status for the router and we are both getting the 300mbps capability as well as 90%+ connections. I decided not to go down to the 1.31na firmware and kept the 1.33na. I hope that the next firmware might improve it to no drops. The router sits in the clear and we are only about 15 feet from it while we are on. :/

Add all of the MACS for your machines in your house to the Advanced | Network Filter tab.  That's not perfect but he'll probably move on to lower-hanging fruit.  I'd also question how you have your wireless security set up, but I can't see your config.

You may need to find a friend to help you set this up that knows a bit more about networking.

You should also change your SSID and make it invisible.  Again, not perfect but may as well not make it easy for them.

This is interesting. I was getting a strange device identifiable only as ''Kb'' for a while. I couldn't figure out what or where it was coming from and it finally disappeared. But I have both the SSID hidden and WPA2 and N-only enabled.

I haven't seen it since but to this day, it was strange.

Another thing you can do is change the Workgroup Name on your systems as Windows defaults to putting everything in the "Workgroup" workgroup name.
