INTERNET Port not working
« on: May 12, 2010, 05:04:17 PM »

I'm using the DIR-655 along with DSL-2540B.  For some reason now it appears that the INTERNET port on the DIR-655 won't work, thus no wireless for me.

I can run a line from any port on the DSL-2540B to any other port on the DIR-655 and I can make a network connection but just not the INTERNET port.

No lights work on either end when a cable is connected to the INTERNET port.

Any ideas?  Or did it shoot craps and I need to buy another?

Hi lapper,

DSL-2540B I take is a DSL Modem?

You plug the WAN port of the D-Link Router into the 1st Lan Port on the DSL Modem.

Reboot both Devices.

That's what I've done, but it showed no connectivity.  But if I didn't use the WAN port and used one of the other 4 open ports it would show connectivity and work as a router, just not the wireless part.

Surprising enough after hours of frustration I hooked it back up again, to the WAN port, and the connectivity lights did work, but the wireless still would not work.

I'm thinking that the WAN port on my DIR-655 is bad.  Is there a way to test this positively before I shell out money for a new one?

Hi lapper,

You need to disable the Wireless portion on the DSL-2540B Modem, if it has a Wireless portion.

Make sure the Wireless Radio on the D-Link Router is Enabled. Use your Wired Computer to the D-Link Router. Make sure it has a unique SSID Signal Name so you can find the correct one.

The IP Address to log into the D-Link Router must be different from the DSL-2540B.

The D-Link IP Address is 192.168.0.1

What is the DSL-2540B IP Address, which is not your Internet IP Address?

To my knowledge, it has no wireless portion.

I built my home about 3 years ago and have the whole house networked.  When I initially set up the DSL-2540B a few weeks ago, I did have to connect directly from my main computer, but then reconnected the way I had it.

I don't think I mentioned it before, but everything was working fine for a couple weeks (wired and wireless).

The IP Address to log into the D-Link Router must be different from the DSL-2540B.
The D-Link IP Address is 192.168.0.1
What is the DSL-2540B IP Address, which is not your Internet IP Address?

It's 192.168.1.1
So when I want to interact with either the modem or the router, I must connect that device directly to my main computer.

Now that the connection lights are working on both ends, I can access my local network utilizing the WAN port but still not the Internet wirelessly.  If I plug another computer line into one of the other ports it can't get internet access either.  So if I want internet I have to connect directly to the DSL-Modem.

Hi lapper,

I am right now answering this from my Wireless Computer connected to a D-Link DIR-655 A3 Router which is in turn plugged into an ActionTec MI424WR-GEN2 Model Router from Verizon FIOS.

I have the Verizon ActionTec Router and D-Link Router plugged into the same Belkin Surge Protector Strip with an Off / On Switch.

Your DSL Modem must have its Radio turned off.  On your DSL Modem, if it has a Firewall setting, it must be set to its Minimum Security Setting. You must put the D-Link Router in the DMZ Zone, if the Modem has a setting like that.

Once you have the Physical Setup in place, turn off the Power Strip or disconnect the DSL Modem and Router at the same time for one minute. Reboot the Wired Computer and turn on the Power Strip or plug them back in.

You should be able to log into the DSL Modem by its IP Address of 192.168.1.1 and the D-Link Router without having to disconnect anything, by using 192.168.0.1
