One drive has disappeared

Hi,

I have 2 1 TB drives on my DNS-323, with Firmware Version 1.07, since about one year and all worked fine. And suddendly, volume_2 has disappeared (either from Windows or when I connect directly with linux on the DNS).
When I connect to the DNS administration interface, I get the following message :
"Your new second hard drive will now be formatted"
and DNS asks me to format it.

I have done nothing on my DNS (not extracted any drive or whatever). What could had happened ?

I'd probably remove it and test it on a computer first to see if the drive has died.

Any other idea ? The fact is that I have currently no mean to test it on my computer.

If it has important data on it, I suggest you find a way.

Of course, you should have a backup of the data anyway, right?

Which way do you recommend ? Is there for example a kind of USB plugable stuff that would accept the disk ?

The best way to test a drive is a direct connection to a PC controller.  I've had mixed to poor results trying to diagnose a drive in a USB enclosure, just isn't as good as a direct connection.  To that aim, I have a SATA drive slot adapter to slide a SATA drive into my system for testing.  I also have another system with an IDE drive drawer for that kind of tests.

Like I said, how important is your data? ;)

This slot adapter is external or internal ? I don't know how to search it (in french ;-) ) Do you have an URL as an example to understand what it is ?

I have 5 DNS-323's - 4 are configured with individual hard disks and one is configured as a mirrored RAID

One of the individual drive DNS-323s regularly reports only one drive present after a power interuption.

I then unplug the power and eject and reseat both the hard disks in it and it all goes back to normal with 2 drives found after a reboot.

I wonder if the cooling of the unit during a power failure, then the heating up again could work the drive connector loose. Chip creep anyone ;)

Interesting...but I thought that when you unplug/plug disks, the DNS asks you to reformat them. No ?

My experience is that it doesn't ask you to reformat, but to resyncs your AV server

I unplug and reseat the hard disks whilst the DNS-323 is turned off - so the problem in my case is probably either a bad connection to one of the drives or a problem with the DNS-323 failing to find one of the drives when it boots up.

I have powered up one of my DNS-323's with the hard disks removed and then powered down and refitted them and then powered the DNS up again with no request to format the hard disks - the DNS-323 just recognises them again.
