Does anyone have this problem with a US DIR-655? I think two of the posters have mentioned they have EU versions.

Hi AWDL,

DIR-655 A3 Firmware 1.11 USA Version here. If you click the Advanced Tab, click Access Control.
Access Control is not check.  I checked Access Control. Click Add Policy.
This wizard will guide you through the following steps to add a new policy for Access Control.
I click Next.
Choose a unique name for your policy.
If I leave it blank, the error message is : The Policy Name cannot be blank.
When typing in a name no error appears.

Oh, by the way, I had receive the unit with Firmware Version 1.10 installed. I upgraded to Firmware 1.11.

This seems quite logical though... ???

The update is this:

Since we can't replicate this error message even on RMA'd units for this problem. We have PM going through all the situations were they will throw the error message in question.

Well, having lately "upgraded" to the 1.20 firmware, the router is not stuck in an infinite reboot loop. Trying unplugging the power for a number of hours, didnt help. Ended up purchasing a new router (picked up a random one in the nearest computer shop, just needed something to ensure i have internet for the next little while).

I looked at the RMA website, and it says that I need a "case id". I take it I should call the dlink tech support, get case id, and then rma the unit? I bought it more than a year ago, so thats probably past the warranty period. What procedure should I follow in order to get a replacement router? I'm in Canada, by the way, if it matters.

Thanks.

My unit is having this exact same problem.  I cannot add access control policies due to the message "Name can not be empty string."  I have tried everything, even upgraded the firmware to version 1.31 (which I now regret because I understand that access control works in firmware version 1.03 and I can not downgrade).

I find it hard to believe that no one else is having this problem; either that or other users are using methods other than access control because they can not get it to work.

I would be willing to RMA my unit since it appears Dlink can not duplicate the error.  I believe the error is hardware revision specific.  I have hardware revision A2.

Try reflashing 1.31 and setting up manually from factory default (no restore of saved config). If the problem persists you can try to apply for an RMA (send the Dlink tech a PM)

I have tried that as well and still get the error, even after a manual setup.  As I said, I still thnk it's a hardwre version issue (I have hardware version A2).

I have sent a PM to Lycan inquiring about an RMA.

I have hardware version A2 too, but haven't seen the notice anywhere. So you can rule out the revision question.

What is the solution to this problem?

I have had my router for a while but I am trying to set up the access control today. "Current Firmware Version :  1.21;Current Firmware Date : 2008/10/09" The hardware is an A2. I have tried letters only, numbers only, combination of letters and numbers and have tried to leave it blank. I have also tried accessing the page both from Mac OS X 10.4 and Vista. All with the same result. When the router goes to save the page it returns an error "The name cannot be an empty string." and nothing is saved. I have not seen any other problems with it

I've never used Access Control so after reading your post I decided to try it. I have A3, 1.32Beta. I typed in "Control" for a name and everything worked. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Ok, it's September of 2009, and i have had this issue pretty much since I can remember. I am still having the issue. I cannot establish (create) Access Control Policy, cannot use the feature, which seems to be at the heart of the blocking, etc. on this router. Now I need this feature because my teenager is doing more on the computer. I have been through every firmware revision there is so far, and countless, painstaking manual reconfigurations of router settings, and the feature just DOES NOT WORK. What is the solution D-Link? What are we to do here? This is a real issue, and not at all a user-level mass blunder. The Access Control does not accept any policy name, not even the number 1 or the letter A, and somewhere the blocking and scheduling part of the firmware is completely broken. I have seen it posted in this thread that the problem cannot be reproduced? That has got to be an internal office disconnect between technical and forum somewhere. All one need do is go to the Access Control section of the router, enable it and then try to create a policy. That's it, you'll see the issue straight away, no extra questions, nothing funky; it simply does not work. Please let us know what you can do for us. Thanks.

DMB....

try using a different browser....I forget is that was mentioned earlier in that thread....  The bug it references shows up in several different ways besides the main one the thread was created about.... Such as in my case, trying to set a schedule's time, and being told that the time I set is in error or rather invalid.....sometimes a time like 01:30 AM will work....but  01:15 AM is invalid....

Go figger....

Thanks for responding...

Tried IE, Firefox; Same results. In Opera, there is a java issue that i don't see in the other browsers. the java (updated and running properly) scripts wont run correctly from the get go... I haven't gone to Safari. Tried it from Firefox in a Linux dist. also (Ubuntu).

I have noticed that "name can not be an empty string" happens when the Access Control check box is selected, and then you click on the save settings button, without even adding a policy, which of course makes sense, and seems like a legitimate error message. It's as if when one runs the add policy wizard, upon saving their policy at the wizard's end, it is coming back to the Access Control screen without being able to save the policy in the ROM / Flash storage on the router; and then to be added to a list of policies that I assume will form near the bottom of that A.C. screen at that point.

I really appreciate the input, any other thoughts?

Also, it seems that it may not matter, seeing some of the previous posts, but:

Firmware Version: 1.32NA
Hardware Version: A1/A2

Can I send mine back for testing? I thought i saw it mentioned that someone could be the guinea pig, although it seems like i am late getting here, and it's been over two years I believe...
Can I get a later Hardware Version, or simply get mine replaced for one that works?
