I have some questions about the guest zone on the Dir 655 .
I thought this would be a good feature to have because it boasted a schedule to enable the guest zone.
The reason I wanted this feature is so my son could connect to the internet with his laptop , But I wanted to limit his time so he wasn't on the internet all day.
I set the schedule. But he is still able to connect whenever he wants.
I also set the access control , naming his computer and mac address. He can still connect whenever he wants.
Is there something I am missing ?
Or does the schedule not actually limit the connectivity of the guest zone?
Do I have to enable it and disable it every time ?

He is probably connecting to your neighbor's wireless signals....not yours.

I use access controls for the same purpose here, and they work, but they are far ffrom totally secure.  Just go thru AOL and it bypasses the access controls in cartain situations.

Do you have DNS Relay enabled ?  You need it enabled for Access controls to work.

No I set it up his computer is configured to connect to the SSID that I have set up as the guest zone.
Not too sure about the DNS relay I will have to check that setting, But as far as I know the access control is set correctly as well as the guest zone.
You say AOL bypasses the access controls? What about firefox mozzila ? any known issues there?

When your kids connect do they have to enter the shared security key every time ? or does it just automatically connect?
I've saved the shared security key and set his computer to connect automatically to the guest zone ssid..

Hi,

If windows works properly, it auto-connects each boot.  I don't use the guest zone for this stuff....As far as I understand, and I may be wrong, guest zone is an either/or (on full or off full) thing, which is not what I want.

AOL acts as a large proxy of sorts.  If you can connect to AOL, and use their browser, it bypasses the website filters and such in the router because the router just sees a connection to an AOL IP.  You would have to block the AOL IP's which I presume fluctuate at random (within the AOL IP range)...

Dns relay is on.
And yes I do believe it is an either on all the time feature or off all the time ..
However the time limit perimeters should limit when the user can connect to the internet , should it not ?
So I say I only want him to use the internet between five and six PM  which is what is in the schedule .
Then he should only be able to connect during that time , not at 4 pm or ten pm .. correct?

Hi,

In your access control policy, did you choose the schedule name you set up previously ?

When I set up our policy's, I set days & times (under schedules section).....Then I created a policy under Access Control, choosing the LAN IP & MACs I want to control....You can also set up website filters to work in conjunction with the access control policy, if you enable the website filter option in the access policy setups....

Save and reboot the router...

Is it true that the guest zone will only work on wired computers?
This option isn't available for wireless connections to the DIR-655 ?

The Guest Zone is for Wireless connections.

That's what I thought , But I just read an older post. Someone had said they only work on wired connections , But I couldn't see the point behind that.

So why won't it work for my wireless connection?

I have DNS relay enabled.
Do I need to list the i.p address as well as the mac address of the computer in question , I believe I only did the mac address when I set it up , could that be the issue ?
I also set up access control.

I don't see why it isn't working for me ..

The Guest Zone is for Wireless connections.

El Diablo, Check to see if "Securespot services" under "advanced" tab is enabled. Disabling it should get your access control settings to work as they should. My access controls, including web filtering, would not work until I disabled Securespot services.
